Recommendations for Cleats for toe clips
 

Hi, all.
Today my buddy and I were riding our vintage Paramounts and complaining about our toe clips. His are the blue ones from Yellow Jersey, and mine are from I can’t remember where, but are in the pictures below. Both seem to have problems seating onto the cage because they are so soft at any amount of walking on them deforms the soft plastic at the slot thereby narrowing it, so a number of pullouts going up hills—fun!
We were talking about the need for using a somewhat deformable plastic so that the cleats wouldn’t crack while being bolted on, but there must be something better out there. Maybe something with a metal insert at the slot like I had back in the day?

What is the bolt pattern on the shoe, is it specific to the shoe?

Metal cleats though more durable tend to tear up one's super legero pedals. So a softer cleat material has its advantages. One could clean up the slot with a file.

The bolt pattern looks like an early Look set up. I did just order a set of TA criterium cleats that I will drill and try out. I haven’t filed them yet, but I have used a razor blade to take off burrs, etc. I just worry about longevity. Good point about tearing up the cages. There are always trade-offs…

I still have clips on all my bikes.

Also keirin cleats come in almost all old set ups.

@ceya, thanks for the recommendations on those cleats. Those MKS ones look good, especially since the slot is recessed.

Does that small picture show a locking mechanism on the pedal for the Kerin cleat? I've never seen that; I must not get out much.

The MKS cleats have posts to keep them off the ground when walking and the pedals have a lever-actuated locking mechanism to lock your foot in irrevocably. The drilling is basic Shimano/Look 3-hole so you can use screws or bolts in those holes with traditional non-drilled shoes or use them on any 3-hole shoe.

There are hordes of cleats available if you go look at EAI Imports. Some are nail-on, some are 3-hole, some are 2-hole, and there are some custom ones. I installed cleats for years with nails, with screws, with sheet metal screws, with rivets, you name it. Track still has a variety of pedals designed to lock in your shoes and most of the cleats have slots -- Japanese pedals mostly. You'll find almost all of them at EAI, and a lot of them at Track Supermarket, at Ben's Cycles, and a few at scattered other sites.
