used to go to a guys shop in upstate ny and watch a guy named Howie Needham make custom flamenco guitars. I asked him 40 years ago how much one cost and he said 20000 dollars....when he finished with one he would play it for a long time. If one didn't sound right he would throw it out! I think he makes or did make only violins after that period. Last I knew one of his violins was 40000.

Reminds me about a well to do, very successful, friend. One day he decided he was going to be a flamenco guitarist. Sold house, everything, moved to Spain to learn. Unfortunately, lost track of him but have wondered how his life turned out.

As an acoustic guitarist, I really enjoyed that video. Didn't realize Goodall was such a small shop.

I'm happy with my Collings, Santa Cruzes, and Martins.

I have an (old) friend from a long time back who has been building guitars for a LONG time. Like RS, he closed his order list after it exceeded a 9 year wait. His flat tops begin at ~$30K and his archtops - one of which is included in the Smithsonian collection of the 'Blue Guitar Project' - go for well over that.

I really enjoyed watching that. I'm a self-taught and not very good guitar player, but enjoy it immensely. I bought myself a martin in 1999 and also loved a Collins and a Goodall I played at the same time (buffalo bros guitars, now out of business). I almost bought the Goodall, really was the best sounding, but it was more than i wanted to spend--wish i had.

I think it's unusual for luthiers to make both high end violins and guitars.
Actually, $20k for violins and other carved bowed instruments may be not much higher than median for a professional instrument. We have a handful of luthiers here locally, including the guy who makes Mark O'Connor's instruments.

Goodall makes a fine guitar for sure. I've been making guitars for over 25 years now. I just finished my 65th one last month and the first one I've ever built using Brazilian rosewood. It's a sort of hobby side business for me really fun thing to do and very rewarding, and very frustrating too :D
