Are disc rotors all the same?
 

I have a Cannondale tandem and just bought a set of Hy/Rd brakes to go on it (replacing BB7). I have a second set of wheels without rotors on it and am seeking advice: Do I go to ebay and pick an aesthetically appealing set of SS rotors? Or, is there more to this than I know?

Also, I recall once reading that there's a better brake pad to use with the hy/rd's than the stock pad. What was it?

The best rotors for heat dissipation are the Shimano Freezas. I don't know how extreme the conditions are where you ride.

I definitely liked my shimano icetech rotors much better than the avids that came with bb7s. They bit better, almost no noise and easier to true (2 piece rotos). They also apparently run cooler.

I second the icetechs as excellent.

Never had to true an Ice-Tech rotor. Kind of hate to admit it but have also had great luck with Chinese two piece rotors.

IceTech rotors are the best right now. In fact, all Shimano rotors are excellent. On the flip side, there are some really crappy rotors out there that we've had to replace, even rotors on new bikes with zero wear, because of the problems they've caused.

If you are going to use 2 sets of wheels I suggest the same rotors on both. Some have a different thickness which means you have to readjust each time you switch wheels. BTDT.

You may need to shim out some of the rotors if they don't line up exactly like the others.

Chinese special rotor by request.

i'll say that most of the name brand ones have been fine. there were some growing pains years back with warping and thudding but i think they've been more or less worked out.
fwiw, most of my disc experience has been on mtb, so unsure how they compare on longer road descents. my only road disc bike hase freezas and they're fine.

for a disc brake newbie is there a basic writeup of whatever is bog standard these days? or is it still "evolving"?
