Pics of actual rando bikes please

I have a rando style bike, I ride it all over the place but I do not do events with it and I have no idea how it would actually perform (the rider would be the main limitation so I guess it doesn't really matter). I know people ride all sorts of bikes in actual randonneur events, I think a lot of the bikes are more road-ish than the "rando" trend that has become popular recently.

Based on the speedvagan rando bike thread it sounds like we have some accomplished randonneurs here.

I would love to see pictures of bicycle that have actually participated in these events. Perhaps a list of the events accomplished with the bike as well?

Thanks

One of our forum members rode PBP on a fixed-gear, and is now riding the Colorado High Country 1200 km brevet on a fixed-gear!

Randonneurs ride all different kinds of bikes. There was even a group of fatbikes at PBP in 2019.

Here is my travel bike in France. I dnf'ed pbp with about 150 miles to go because my knee was the size of a grapefruit. I need to get the frame paintedhttps://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...31c2c599_c.jpgtravelbikenew by unterhausen, on Flickr

I have been impressed by how little rust there is on it.

Here is a different bike I have done a lot of randonneuring with.
This was from a 1200k that started in Michigan and finished in Green Bay. This picture was taken in UP Michigan, about 100 miles from the border with Wisconsin. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...02e871d2_c.jpgimage (2) by unterhausen, on Flickr

I remember watching a PBP doc on vimeo and most of the bikes on there were just road bikes with bunch of bags on it. The low trail front bag thing seems to be a thing more here in the US and only with some randonneurs. I am good with it because I love how traditional randonneur bikes look, they also ride very well for long distances so I am not surprised it has been adapted by some.

I'm not a super accomplished randonneur, but I've done several 200k and 300K Brevets. This season I used my Seven Redsky to complete, 200k, 300k, and my first 400K. I'm considering trying a 600k in September. This bike has been perfect, although I really should have put fenders on for the rainy, cold 300k. 32c tires feel perfect for me even on rough New England pavement. I moved my 15+ year old Schimdt dynohub from my touring bike for the 400 so the wheels don't really match.

I think that traditional randonneuring bikes are highly functional for long distance road rides. I was trying to find the picture of the bike I rode PBP on in 2011, it's not that traditional. That year, I took a lot of pictures of bikes when I got to Brest. They were almost all racing bikes plus a few Moultons. I think the only traditional randonneur I saw that year was when I was eating outside a control and Jan Heine rode up, got his card stamped, and rode off.

I've only seen a 2-3 traditional french style rando bikes at local brevets. I built mine up thinking it would be transcendental and ended up hating it, too slow and too much luggage capacity for how I wanted to ride the events. Of course, longer rides may have changed my perception but it was bad enough I never got there.

Found a picture of the fatbikes from 2019 PBP. They really weren't prepared to carry much, which is a problem when the temperatures range from 38F to 85F and you have to deal with rain. I am pretty sure they rode 750 miles with their stuff in a plastic bag as seen https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...463687a4_c.jpgpbpfatbikes by unterhausen, on Flickr

That's a cool bike! Did you build it yourself?

prototoast 07-14-2021 09:33 PM

Don't do randonneuring myself, but most of the people I know who do just use normal road bikes with some bags strapped on.

This is a huge contrast to the SV rando bike thread.

Gotta love the internet.

You'll see all kinds of rando bikes on brevets. This was my rando for PBP in '07. And a few shots of the Campanile bike room and around the inspection and start from that year. As others have observed, I'd say the majority were road bikes with bags, although IME there is definitely merit to riding a more purpose-built rando as the kms increase.
