That must have been quite the summer. Landing on the moon and then woodstock... sending the 60's out with a bang!

Did all those acts really play through the night? That seems crazy.

In high school my go to question for all new teachers (usually first day of class came with “ask me anything” monologue) and I always asked

“Did you go to Woodstock?”

My uncle told story of hitchhiking their with a buddy and $10 in his pocket

That poster shows Woodstock taking place in Wallkill, but it actually took place in Bethel, quite a distance away. I've ridden past the Woodstock site at Max Yasgur's farm many times.

I go back and watch those performances every once in a while...so much awesome.

That poster promotes the original venue. They had to scramble to find a new one, settling on Bethel.

The organizers of "Woodstock" first approached the Town of Woodstock (whence the festival got its name) and then the village of Saugerties, but neither would approve it. So they then approached the town of Wallkill, and were able to secure a deal to lease a property there. Thus, the posters were printed giving the location as Wallkill. But just 3 weeks before the festival was to start, the Wallkill Zoning Board banned the concert (based on the planned portable toilets not meeing town code), and the organizers had to quickly find another location. Fortunately, they found Max Yasgur, who was receptive to renting out his farm in Bethel for the festival. The organizers then had to move the entire event in just a few weeks.

I watched an hour or so of that the other night. Excellent documentary made it clear that the promoters lost a lot of money.

I had a girlfriend in college who lived in Liberty , NY and she went to Woodstock with her aunt. She said it was a pretty crazy time for a 15 year old girl with a 20 year old aunt.

In 1967 or so, they formed Woodstock Ventures with the plan on building a recording studio in Woodstock NY. Back then, a lot of artists were there (Dylan had a home there). When they decided to do the Festival, they used the name of their organization, "Woodstock... Presents...", but I don't believe they ever approached the town of Woodstock for the location of the Festival.
