California, bottom to top ride report(s)

If you follow my instagram, you've seen these pics, but just wanted to post here about the excellent couple weeks i just spent on the left coast mostly working, but riding a bunch too.

Flew into SD and started driving south. Had some business in the El Centro/Coachella/Niland area, where it was HOT

Got busy getting the bike up and running...

Got up early one morning and took the bike out to Joshua Tree. Fantastic, interesting riding, lots of extreme wind though. There is elevation change to deal with, but the wind was the real challenge out there.

Next ride of interest was in the Anza Borrego area...

more good times and varied terrain out in the desert than this NY'er usually gets to see...

Next up...

Yosemite area. Found a FANTASTIC off the beaten path ranch/resort/hotel for cheap money that was a perfect base camp for a long weekend of riding out in the hills of the sierras.

There are, what seems like an endless network of quiet back roads to explore. Bringing water, low gears and a sense of humor is recommended. Of course, my Serotta is a road bike, and the 25c tires i brought are all i had...so choosing good lines, walking some really rough stuff and having a good time was on the menu.

Last stop was Sonoma/Napa area.

Beautiful scenery, vistas, winding quiet back roads, but man....

the actual roads out in Sonoma county are a damn mess. terrible blacktop, lots of potholes. and yes, a couple of flats. my only two of the trip.

incidentally, even though not IDEAL for all conditions, the Serotta performed flawlessly as usual. Friction downtube shifters, compact crankset, and class leading Mavic SSC brakes get the job done, every time.

Nick, that is very brave... No saddle bag for extra tubes or a tire? in unknown/rough road conditions? Were you riding tubeless?

i carry all that stuff in my jersey pocket Matt. definitely not tubeless for a travel bike. I got a few flats in Sonoma too. always at least one extra tube, patch kit, and the frame pump along for the ride.

Cool photos, you made the most of your working/adventure trip.

Great photos, you covered quite a bit of ground.

Love that bike, Angry. I like how you roll!

livingminimal 04-23-2018 08:18 AM

this awesome. glad you got to enjoy our magical state.
Did you top-to-bottom Joshua Tree? Gate to gate is an incredible roll. really riding anywhere inside the boundaries is awesome.

Beautiful photos! Come back again-you just scratched the scratch :)

...although, I'm surprised you survived the roads with a non "gravel" frame, rim brakes and ~25 mm tires ;)

Wait.

What the **** were you doing in Niland of all places?

haha, yes, it's an obscure place for sure.

work stuff, but took the obligatory pilgrimage to salvation mtn and cruise around slab city.

i've actually been down there a few times now, but never had a bike with me before.

I started up Sonora Pass on my motorcycle about this time of year knowing it would be cold but I was wearing my aerostich (sic) Roadcrafter Suit so I thought I was prepared. Then I ran into snow flurries. That didn't stop me but when I met some guys on Harleys coming DOWN covered in snow I turned around.
