Yeah, I don't do auctions on eBay anymore for this very reason.

There's always a chance, after a week of waiting and getting primed to sell, that the high bidder backs out. Then you do second chance offers to the next bidders and hardly anyone accepts or responds, probably because they lost interest in the winning "high" or they wonder why the high bidder backed out. Then you relist, except this time everyone is soured on the deal and it looks fishy.

It happens a lot on high $ items where there is no risk to the bidders to actually follow through other than a symbolic ding that means nothing.

I'm all about Buy It Now or Best Offer these days. There is a very low chance of back out on these deals.

I have a theory about that:
Seller posts item with a high BiN and auction option, but gets no bids, perhaps because there's so little previous sale price history to give potential buyers an idea of what the market price is. Seller has shill bidder bid for the bike at an elevated price and then 'back out'. I believe in that situation the final value fee (which is the big one) to eBay is canceled. Seller then relists the item in the same manner.

Now, when someone does a little research to find out what market price is, the first canceled sale shows up under sold/completed auctions but does not indicate that the buyer backed out. So there would be something to reassure the potential buyer that the price was appropriate, especially if they didn't pick up that it was the same item. Yeah, not a lot of reassurance, but some anyway.

I've seen multiple instances where an item has been posted, sold, and then reposted at the same price several times. Assuming there are only so many legitimate instances where a buyer actually backs out, this would seem suspicious. Especially considering that over twenty years of selling and buying thousands of items on eBay, I have personally only had this happen maybe twice.

eBay also seems to be pushing the Best Offer situation too. I don't know about the rest of you, but I get a lot of offers now from sellers -- 10-15% off of their BIN price in a direct email from eBay if I looked at the listing or "watched" it...

Yup, ebay started a feature that allows you to send an offer to all the watchers of an item.

It's a great idea and I don't know why they didn't do this earlier. It does feel a little "big brother" in that you can no longer watch an item without getting directly marketed to.

tuscanyswe 06-25-2019 01:30 PM

I think you can only do the best offer once to the same "watcher".

when you have new watchers you can send out another best offer to the new only. Dont think the ones you allrdy sent the first offer will receive the 2nd one.

So i dont think it works that great for sellers imo (at least not for me thus far).

Buyers have 3-5 attempts to offer their best offer seller only once and perhaps thats why its not so usefull thus far for me. Guess one starts out to high hoping someone will bite.

Pains me to list this as I'd be buying it if I hadn't just bought another frame.

This was listed previously for $550 and ended with no bids, and it has no reserve.

these are pretty awesome and one of my all time favorite frames. Even with $100 shipping (likely due to the size of the box with the seatmast), <$650 for a nearly new frame is pretty darn cheap.

Looks like a well-made steel-icious frameset.

worth only $250?

I wanna cry...

ultraman6970 06-26-2019 03:34 PM

Probably somebody went to building classes and got a frame made???

Fairly new and with oversized tubing, I would put a threaded fork and would look awesome.

Either way, not a big name... and probably thats why worth just the cost of material.

The size of bikes im looking for lately aswell... red with metallic in it, that thing under sunlight should look super nice.

Is that frame in CL or something?
