Middle School Student's bike-related survey

A friend's son made this survey as part of a middle school science fair project. It takes about 2 minutes and asks about a project he envisions for bike safety. If you have a couple of minutes to spare, I am sure he could use some more responses:

I had the same thought, but I think we ride the same roads around the East Bay. Thanks for doing that!

done.

if he is not familiar with garmin's radar system, he should take a look. lots of people who use it seem to like it.

edit: not knocking his ideas, just more food for thought for him.

happy to hear of a youngster's interest in cycling and cycling safety.

cheers.

I did it, too.

Agree with Nick that it's nice to see a MS student interested in bikes...

actually anything not connected to staring at a screen.

From a potential user's perspective, I would wonder about "false positives."

Would the device beep anytime it sensed a car approaching from behind, or would it only do it if it projected with X degree of confidence that the cyclist might be hit? If it did it for every car that would be annoying, and I'd be unlikely to use it. If it tried to assess the degree of the threat and behaved accordingly, that would be a much more difficult technical challenge.

My buddy would be constantly beeping: HR zone, Strava segments etc
Not sure I would want more beeps. I only get text alerts from my girls
Modern life is full of noise pollution
But I took survey
Smart helmets y’all!

I'm a varia guy, so kinda already covered.. I do like it, even with (the new one) false positives from other riders occasionally.

I said my biggest fear is getting hit from behind as that's the most common way for a cyclist to be hit. A vehicle changes the odds and type of injury by a lot.

That said, over the past few years, I can think of being hit one time out of about 4 or 5 of going down. The other 3-4 times, I went down solo. It takes a lot to get rid of the "crash fear" after going down.
