For you Campagnolo experts out there, I have a compatibilty question:
Can you use a Campagnolo 10-speed crankset with a 9-speed chain and rear derailleur? I am trying to complete a project bike and sourcing a nice 9-speed crank is difficult. 10-speed cranks are plentiful and I'll go that route if they will work.

U can use a campagnolo 10 speed crankset practically with any type or group brand w/o any problem.

Even if you spot a record C crankset big chance that crankset will work fine with the 9 speed chain and group also. A 10 speed chain will work fine with your stuff also.

Have a 8 speed hybrid with a 10 speed chain and works way better than with the 8 speed crappy chain came with.

10 speed cranks work w/9 or 11.

They don't work so well will 8 speed setups. You need spacers on the ring bolts. They are too narrowly spaced for 8 speed or less drivetrains, IME.

Conversely, I have been able to run old 6 speed cranks in a 10 speed setup, but you need to pay attention to the front shifts, you can drop a chain between the rings on some configurations.

Maybe not. I'm running a DA 7400 eight speed rig with an eight speed chain and a Shimano FC700 10 spd. compact crank (on the Guru Reacelite Zmud sold me!) and the shifting is crisp and perfect.

I have 10s rings on my otherwise 7s friction shifter setup and the 10s chainrings(Campagnolo-big ring) doesn't care at all, works just fine. No need for spacers.
