I don't know what I've been doing lately, but all my bikes seem to have something going on with them. Anyway, the most recent issue is my tire has a weird rip in the rubber, but not the casing (if that's the right word). In the picture I've attached I am pulling back the rubber - you can't see the white if just looking at the tire. It's my front tire, but it's not on the bottom of the tire, but the side. I assume maybe I hit a pothole or something and it took a chunk of the rubber out. I also assume the tire is toast, even though it's holding air just fine, and I have no idea how long it's had the missing rubber. I haven't done this to a tire before, so I'm wondering if the likely culprit is a pothole, a stick, or me mishandling the wheel when packing it in my car. The tire is a Mavic k10 tire, and I really like how they handle. Anyway to fix it, or is it a goner?

i'd crazy glue something like that back together, and keep my eye on it, as long as it didnt penetrate the skin casing, (again, or whatever its called...) and the tire isnt bulging now under full pressure, its probably ok.

A friend of mine was using some poor quality Performance tires. A piece of glass cut the tire from close to the bead a third of away around the tire. Some one had some of those Park patches. He used the patch and pumping the tire up at a fairly low pressure, he was able to make it home.
I think that the adhesive made it easier to work than the old dollar bill fix.

I had a similar cut in my sidewall of my Vittorria Open Paves. I lifted up the flap to see what was cut and the only thing that was cut was the outside rubber so I stopped at a quick stop and bought 4 tubes of super glue (minimum I coul buy for $2.50) and glued it back. It's been fine ever since and I can't tell you how many miles I have on it since but it's several hundred at a minimum.. I have done this with 2 tires and both are fine. Strange that they were both the same type of tire, I'm not sure how durable they are but they are a great riding tire. As long as it's just the outside rubber cut, you should be able to super glue it back. Super glue is great. Depending on the cut type you may want to reapply it after a fer hundred miles but in your case and that type of cut I doubt if you would have to do that. My 2 similar cuts I have not had to revisit.

Probably hit a rock with the sidewall, cut a piece of the edge of the tread loose it looks like. I have a tire here that the whole tread came loose, can't remember what brand. If your casing isn't cut, you might get a lot of miles out of it if you glue it back down.

I haven't used the park tire boot, but I have used park glueless patches to ride on cut tires:

IMHO I'd glue the tire and put it on the rear and keep riding it. I'm more cautious about the front since when they go out, you are more likely to crash.

I took the tire to the bike shop today and the mechanic there recommended shoe goo. He had something similar on hand, so he put it on the rubber, wrapped electrical tape around it, and said to take the tape off once it dries and the tire should be fine. It seemed like a pretty good cheap fix to me.

Shoe Goo works good

Was it a flap you were trying to glue back on or a missing piece of rubber? If it's a missing piece of rubber and you are using the shoe goo to (more or less) replace the rubber, then shoe goo is the right stuff, but if you were trying to glue a flap of rubber back down, that super glue is the right stuff. The shoe goo will not last.
