Is it just me or does something look seriously wrong with the motorcycle in the background as well.

Shallow drops with campy shifters makes so much sense for me.

Maybe for him as well.

Pros who have low handlebars like this rider asked manufacturers for shallow drops because they did not need much more drop. One of the reasons for shallow bars.

For (some/many/most) pros, yes.
For the rest of us...?
I look for the deepest drop bar I can find, but I don't have my stem slammed down against the top HS race.

There's gotta be 8 inches of clearance between the tire and fender.

He's got long legs/arms, a short torso. He has lots of drop in part due to his saddle height, his slammed 'pro' stem and his need to fit on a frame with a relatively short TT. I have the same problem, being 6' with a 36" inseam. I just dispense with the 'pro' part and run 9-10cm of drop, not the 20 or so he's running.

how long is his left leg? Looks uncomfortable.

Yes, it's rare to see a pro with femurs so long that his knee would go past shoulder if bent over completely. Leads to lots of knee-to-elbow interference too. It'd be interesting to see how he fits on a time trial bike.

I'd like to see him on the hoods..

It seems weird that he has so little bend in his elbows when he is obviously trying to get as low as possible but it really doesn't look that bad.

I am guessing he rides that bike further then 99% of the people here so he must be doing something right.

This isn't that big a deal for someone who is flexible.

Guys in the 60s-90s all rode flat back in the classics.

In the modern era lots of guys are sitting way more upright, racers and club riders alike.

. . . this guy really does have unusual body proportions, but is forced by the team to ride a stock sized Canyon because that bike company is their sponsor?

I am definitely not a pro fitter, but for those here who DO know all about it--from what you can see in this photo, could this exact frame be made to fit him better with different stem, spacers, bars, etc?

Other than making the bars lower it doesn't look like there is anything that would prevent some adjustment in just about any direction. And that suggests that maybe he's already where he wants to be regarding fit.

Doesn't his leg look too far extended? Looks to me like it's almost straight. Maybe Pro's do that, dont' know. I know that I have dropped down from rocking my hips, and I don't see any way he would not be rocking with the saddle that high. At least from that picture that's what I get out of it.
PS: I could ride like that and I'm old, for a block.....

The fit works for him.

If it didn't he wouldn't be off the front, presumably.

that's a terrible fit. it's not so much the flat back, which is fine, but the straight arms which present much more frontal area then having bent elbows and forearms more parallel to the ground. gerard vroomen has a good post on his blog about how the body naturally finds it's flex point at the hips, and the arm bend just makes up the rest.

and despite the "he's a pro" adage, many many euro mechanics are still of the "slam the stem, cut the fork, period" fit theory.

I'm sure he's doing lots right, but I bet his elbows hurt at the end of the ride...
