I'm looking for advice on buying a low end indoor trainer for this winter. I've heard fluid trainers have better feel, but I really want to spend less than $200 if I can. Any recommendations? Thanks.

Buy used. There are so many people out there who buy a trainer, use it once or twice, find that they hate riding indoors, and sell it at a big discount.

Yeah, I got my fluid one locally, used, for...$50-$75.

Look for a used Kurt Kinetic. You'll love it.

If you can't find one then DRZRM's Cycleops is the next best thing and he's a really good guy too.

I've run she sh*t out of my Kurt Kinetic and its just as sound as on the day I purchased it. A trainer for the long haul.

Another vote for "used".

Keep your eyes peeled on Craigslist and eBay. I just recon'd craigslist in my area and found Cyclops trainers and a couple Kurt Kinetic Road Machines in your price range, so they can be had anywhere.

My buddy just bought a Cyclops fluid trainer for $40. The only reason he bought it was because it was such a good deal.

Try to buy a fluid or mag trainer. Wind trainers provide a great workout but they're too noisy. Fluid trainers provide the exact same resistance curve but they're much quieter.

I'm in NYC and would be happy to buy local if some one wants to dump one.

Bruce,

Based on your answer I'm guessing you're using it all wrong. These things are coma inducing. Nobody loves their trainer, they just hate being slow more. The best way to get one is to borrow it in the summer, which is the easiest thing in the world to do. Come fall they'll realize they hate the damn thing and it's yours for free.

but if you see a Cateye Cyclosimulator trainer on Craigslist in good shape you should snap it up. The variable resistance offers more options. I picked up one after working with a group that uses them exclusively during the past 2 winters. I used to use a Kurt Kinetic before finding the Cateye.
