I've always wondered how much of an actual difference there is in cyclocross tires - file tread vs. all arounders vs. mud tires. It might feel like a lot on the 200 meters of pavement during a race but something tells me it's tiny and probably won't lose 99.9% of the people a race.

Does anyone have any quantitative data to back anything up?

I would think that pressure has a lot more to do with it.

i have some conti semi-slicks (not sure what they're called at the moment, they're knurled down the center and knobbed on the side) in 32, and they're significantly faster than the conti race kings in 35 at the same pressure. either way, they don't have the grip of the race kings, particularly in anything wet, but they do compete with maxxis raze for grip, and surpass them in lack of rolling resistance. whatever the case, pressure changes everything most significantly.
