will 29er tires fit on 700 c road wheelsets or do the rims need to be wider / or 29er specific

tire and/or rim manufacturers have info on their sites about tire/rim compatibility. 700 is another way of saying 29 so the circumference is the same but at some point wider tires need wider rims to perform properly.

before they made 29'er "specific" rims/wheels, everyone just used road rims, usually open pros, sun cr-18s, and i forget if the rhyno lite was available in 700c then.
