What's the difference between rotation and float as the terms are applied to pedals?

What's the difference between rotation and float as the terms are applied to pedals?
Generally referred to interchangeably, but some people differentiate. For example, Time ATACs have some rotation but also allow some side to side movement between the cleat and pedal and sometimes people refer to that as float and differentiate it from the rotational movement. ALL of the float on Speedplays and Looks and many other pedals is rotational.
