Hi all,

I'm looking for a Merckx as he was one of my heros. I've posted a WTB in the classifieds. There is this one on ebay that is my size:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Brand-New-Eddy-Merckx-Corsa-Extra-711-Replica-48-100-54cm-/110764211375?pt=Road_Bikes&hash=item19ca0fbcaf

Do you think it is worth the price?

Thanks so much.

Offer the seller a cool grand. And if you're local even better. I don't sell on ebay but I'm sure with all the fees (ebay and paypal) and opportunity costs, he's probably looking at pocketing a thousand from the transaction.

Love that frame.

That seems pretty steep. I'm sure that it is a nice bike - however the price is getting inflated by the "limited edition" nature of it being the 7-11 replica, as opposed to a garden variety model. You are the final judge of value - if it makes your gums sweat, go for it.

if you want a Merckx that bad I'll sell you mine for that much :)

If you're buying it to ride it, then the price should reflect the fact that the purchase would come with true piece of mind. So, if you were willing to pay, say $700, for a similar frame in good used condition, then a 30-40% premium for a new frame is appropriate. If you're buying as a store of value, then you probably won't recoup your investment. Conversely, you wont lose too much scratch if you decide to resell.

Tom,

I'm not one for threadless stems on classics, but my feeling is that the bike will sell. He will net around $1160 if it sells at the lowest possible price. This is not unreasonable, and perhaps low, for a NOS frame. A NOS De Rosa or Cinelli would most likely be even higher priced, for comparison.

Good Luck.

NOS Corsa 01 went for $860 a few days back in this size range.

I'm guessing this is one of the recent replicas. Therefore, it's spaced for 130mm in the back and may be built with oversized steel tubing.

For a lugged steel frame that's new/unused, the opening price is very reasonable. Since it's new, I would probably bid 1500-1600 max. although I'd be willing to pay much more if I were to buy a custom lugged steel frame from any contemporary U.S. builder.

If you're looking for more of a "real" vintage Merckx for authenticity, this isn't what you want.

Personally, I'd say keep watching eBay and bid on something a bit more vintage. His earlier frames up to and including the Motorola team frames, had beautiful color schemes.

Be patient.

Normal retail is $1600( I have a 56 for sale). Yes, it's worth it, one of the last 100 steel Eddy is gonna make.

'New' SLX, not oversized.

Nice frame.

Well they aint making any more! If you want a new 54cm slurpee Corsa, that's a good price. It is one of the last 100 steel bikes Eddy ever made and is guaranteed to ride great. I'd rather drop the coin on an MXL because I have such a soft spot for them, but that's a classic, beautiful frame.

Since we are talking about NOS frame, I just fell into a NOS Cinelli Super Corsa from 1984, what do you guys think it is worth? It is still in the Cinelli branded bubble wrap and the stays, brake bridge and head tube are all still wrapped. It is silver, 60 cm and from 1984. I cannot seem to find anything like it on eBay, is $1500 about right?

Sorry to derail, I have been digging around today without much luck and this is just a bit of a coincidence that NOS talk came up.

With used SLX Merckx frames in decent condition going for upwards of $700, I'd say the price is reasonable. And as others have said, it's the last of the steel.

While I personally prefer the older SLX frames with a bit (or more) of chrome, if thinking of this keeps you up at night, buy it. You will not regret it.

I paid a bit more for this one, right off this board.
It's due today!

I understand the allure of classic frames and I have a Merckx Corsa myself, but when one is getting up in the range of 1300, 1400, 1500 for a frame, imho, one should seriously consider spending one's money on something custom.

the seller is California Bicycles in La Jolla, CA. and they are good people. The owner has a LOOOOONG history as a shop owner/technician with quality race bikes.

lol!

I already have 2 custom, wanted something vintage and as close to NOS as I could find.

I wanted a Confente, but the bank said NO! :crap:

It's just a matter of what you like. We all like bikes, yet everyone has different taste. None are right or wrong, just different!

If you're looking for something as close to NOS as you can find and intend to keep it for a long time, you might want to consider buying a nice frame in no-dent condition and then have it resprayed by someone like Al Wanta. It would be less expensive and you'd get exactly what you want in terms of chrome and color scheme. That's what I did and I don't regret it at all, but that bike is a lifetime keeper.

If you're buying this as an investment, original paint is proably better.

Just a thought.

I got one pretty close to how I would want it.
It will be mostly wall art, to be ridden only on very special days, or events!

I paid up for it, but It was close to perfect, at least to me.

Thanks Robert!

No need for paint!

My opinion...waaaay overpriced. I can testify to the fact that if you are a patient shopper then "good and affordable things come to those who wait."
I purchased this complete bike and then about a year ago sold it for $300 more than the asking price of that frame/fork! It was full Campy and in amazing condition.

Take your time, great bikes show up all the time at great prices here on the forum.

oh jeez khrea and jr59, thanks for posting those two examples.

If bikes had stopped evolving right then after either of those set-ups were put together, I would probably be alright with that.
