The new MiNewts from NiteRider are some stellar lights.

MTBR.com has been doing a headlight shootout this month on their main page.

good info there!

if they still have them, Performance has the MiNewt 150 with a tail light for $80 and the 250 (lumens) with a helmet or bar attachment for $90... both are wall or USB rechargeable...

I like the cygolight stuff, but that's just cause I've used it. plenty of friends who love nightrider, etc.

Light and Motion Urban 500 is my choice. No wires, good beam pattern, bright, USB recharge, easy on and off. $159.

Does this come with a helmet mount? According to that MTBR.com review it does, but according to the L & M website and the REI page for the product, it only shows bar mount.

Curious because I would like the flexibility of both options.

My Urban 300 did. The 500 is waiting at the shop for me to pick up. I probably won't be able to get it until next week though.

I'd go with multiple flashlights and mounts. Get some that take 18650 LiIon batteries, a good charger, some mounts and you are set.. You can buy high quality lights, chargers, batteries, etc for <$100 total and have both flood and spot, redundancy, helmet and/or bar mounts, etc. Plus you can upgrade the LED's as they evolve by just buying 'drop-ins'. No real downside except you need to educate yourself a bit before buying. There's lots of info on the web on this stuff but it can be like drinking from a fire hose for the uninitiated. If you search for bike related posts you'll get a filtered version that can help bypass some of the technical jargon.

I was riding with my Dinotte 200L the other night alongside a cyclist that has a MagicShine. The light output of my Dinotte pales in comparison to the magic shine!

I just orderd this Magicshine-like 1200 lumen beast:

http://www.dealextreme.com/p/t6-waterproof-xml-t6-3-mode-1200-lumen-white-led-bike-light-with-battery-pack-set-82510

The coupon code E10sWN2T752YR knocked another $10 off to bring the final price to $34.3.

You never know what you'll get when you order from DealExtreme, the model might be different from the one described, but at that price it's worth the gamble. Ordering just a 7.4v 4400mAh battery like the one with that light will cost more than the DX light, mounts, battery and charger bundled together. Thanks for the link.

To answer your question. Yes, it came with a helmet mount. And it is as bright as all get out for something that is so small and lightweight.

Thanks for the link as well. I'm still in limbo waiting for my recalled magicshine battery to ship. Willing to take a $40 gamble on this to bridge the gap.

Check out the new Nite Rider MiNewt 600 cordless. About $150, small, compact, no wires, 600 lumens. I haven't tried it on the bike yet but outside in the dark it's a ridiculous amount of light for the money.

But it's much bigger and 190g vs 113g for the L&M Urban 500

I have one of these and it's is an amazing product. Easily bright enough for singletrack. Small enough to put on your helmet and forget about it. No cords or anything to wrestle with either. Perfecto.

Any idea how I can get that coupon code to work? Not working for me.

i've been using the niterider minewt 600 for about 2 months now. only things i don't like about it is the barmount which doesnt clamp as securely as i would like and the barmount won't work on my cross bike because the cross levers are in the way. also, if you have the light on high and the battery starts to run low the light will turn off on it's own. you then have to turn the light back on, and you can then only use the low beam. this feature could get you into trouble if you were doing a technical descent on your mtb when the light all the sudden the light turns off on ya.

for the price though the 600 is still a very good buy. it's a very nice light for commuting/road riding. for dedicated off-road use i will probably end up buying something like the light&motion stella 600.

It was a code emailed to me this morning for $10 off of $20. I tried it again after my order this morning and it was working. It may very well be a unique code that has exceeded its usage. Sorry.

I just bought that exact light from Amazon for $107. Comes with the bar or helmet mount. Nice and bright. See the link, I bought it from BikeZila, shipped from Staten Island and arrived in a day or 2. Total was $115 with shipping.

Ps. I have the Dinotte 200 system front and back. The back is so bright I can't use it when riding with my Tuesday night buddies as it blinds them. The white front pails in comparison to the Niterider.

I just bought the Supernova Airstream, international version, 370 lumens, which appears much brighter than the MiNewt 350 because of its lens. The Terraflux lens is asymmetical, so it shines more light onto the road surface, rather than being wasted into the sky. 164 grams, O ring mount, 4 light settings plus flash with a run time of 2.5 to 7 hours, Li-ion battery, optional helmet mount and usb charger, a little pricey at 260. Nice white beam pattern, 6500K I think. Nice aesthetics too.

I wouldn't go bombing down a mountain at 40mph, but for around town or commuting its more than enough.

Blackburn

Both make good lights. Bright, USB charge, reliable but there are lots of lights out there.
