I need a backpack air travel business trips and possibly using it daily instead of my Tumi case. I am finding myself on a plane a lot more than usual but not staying over night. I've currently got a briefcase / messenger bag but with the Macbook Pro 15 incher, a couple of files and my Kindle, I find the one strap tough on my shoulder.

So I've been searching for a backpack that can work for travel and fit the stuf mentioned above, but is not too big, and looks somewhat professional. I've read all of the threads on this site and others but most revolve around commuting which isn't the purpose of the bag. Some of the ones I've found are the Rapha (looks nice but very few pictures of how its organized), the Deuter Giga Flat, The Brenthaven Prostyle Slimpack and the Case Logic Corvus. Also looked at Banjo Bros Metro and the North Face Double Shot. I'll probably go with black.

Any suggestions my friends? Mucho Gracias.

How professional do you have to look?

I've had a whole mess of backpacks since I tend to destroy them (and I've been in school longer than I care to admit). Ogio makes some nice stuff that's well padded, and has a great warranty to boot. Haven't had a more comfortable backpack. They don't look as professional as a Tumi though.

How professional do you have to look?Yo, not to get all "Art of the Wardrobe" on you, but he's asking about backpacks. The answer, clearly, is "Not at all."

maybe not professional enough looking but they do work well.

Well actually.... I'm not looking to pull a Zoolander or anything but I'm in investments and would like something professional enough to pull off with slacks and a dress shirt but not with a suit.

Incase has similar slim backpacks (http://www.goincase.com/products/style/Backpack) like Rapha, but at the end of the day it still is a backpack.

I can't wait for laptops to slim down like the Macbook Air, or for more companies to adopt the iPad as it will change how we carry things for work.

I really like the Krakow. Do you have one? How are the internal pockets and padding for the laptop?

a friend used to have the soyuz and i checked the krakow out at the NY store last time i was there. I cant remember anything too helpful about the specifics of the pockets or padding.

Only after you buy the Rapha pack can you pick up this nice little add on!

Rain Cover (http://www.rapha.cc/backpack-cover)

Almost makes my waterproof Ortlieb look foolish by comparison. Almost.

Seriously though the Rapha pack seems the most stylish, and nothing of their's has ever let me down on it's intended purpose. Good luck.

I see a lot of Ogio backpacks carried by professionals. They aren't as nice looking as a Tumi, but they're fine. I see a lot of them issued by bigger firms - their logo and/or name is embroidered on the pack.

The white stripe on the Rapha is too sporty, in my opinion. Stick with plain black.

WOW - just watched that video. Annoying is an understatement. But helpful in showing the interior of the bag. Thanks for the heads up.

The backpack comes with that pink cover of goodness. Not sure if it fits the "professional" tag but its sweet enough that I just might overlook that minor point.

As mentioned, the Incase looks a lot like the Rapha bag, less stripe. It's got a padded laptop sleeve, another for files/iPad and some room left over. It's a smart design and weighs next to nothing. I got mine at the Apple store.

I recommend a Filson 257 for the slacks and shirt look. More casual than a briefcase but not too studied. Sorry, that's the best I can do. I think the backpack just puts out an "IT Consultant" vibe.

I agree this is a tough call. I hate the asymmetry of carrying a loaded messenger bag and a backpack can ruin a whole outfit. Of the options presented here, the Brooks is really nice - definitely the most tailored of them all. It also has a lot more personality than the boring black carry-on that the majority of business folks use. You'd score fashion points with me if you had something like the Brooks.

(BTW Greg - I have a Patagonia backpack and it's great, albeit too casual for the OP's purpose.)

Ah yes perhaps didn't read carefully enough or else forgot that not everyone has the luxury I enjoy running an enviro ngo that's a Patagonia grantee! Indeed Patagonia is pretty much the official wardrobe

One of the things I like about mine is one of the compartments is lined like a dry bag so its really handy when in tropical climes.

Agreed on all fronts Greg!
I'm a huge fan of Patagonia and live in it most days. Not only are their products great, but their environmental ethos has truly changed the clothing industry. For example, they were the pioneers of organic cotton clothing. Great products - and yes, the backpacks are especially well thought-out. I can zip through the airport security line with mine.

I travel a lot for work, mostly 1 night overnights. I use a Osprey Flapjack. It can hold a laptop, shoes, change of clothes and still looks good enough to take in to meetings.

Everything I carry in mine:
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-yE-S-TkXKkU/TETnsbBkEnI/AAAAAAAAC0o/tksyf21QoDg/s912/IMG_0832.JPG

It easily fits in the overhead of a small commuter plane. And it has not been any worse for wear over the past year of use. Which says a lot.

As a different option check these out:

http://www.goruck.com/shop/

I use a GR1 daily. I'm not in IT, wear shirt and slacks everyday and I love it. I also use it for personal travel, weekends, etc. I switched from a Tumi laptop bag and haven't looked back. Not the cheapest option but they have a lifetime warranty. A 'Radio' is slightly smaller (but will fit a 15" laptop) so it might work for you.

If you want to use a backback for work don't bother with trying to disguise it as that won;t work. Get something functional and own "it".

Yeah, it's a toss-up between IT Consultant (MW/Chrome/Timbuk2/Incase), just got out of college (TNF), or grown-up schoolboy (Brooks and whatever other waxed canvas stuff). Take your pick and move on.

Wooly - I fly frequently for work, to my office in OC. I have owned and used both, a waxed canvas and leather bag from Filson (257) and a Mountainsmith laptop dedicated backpack. I used the backpack for several years, then got the Filson bag primarily for aesthetic purposes. The Filson bag is solid and well built. However, it is heavy and the pocket and divider organization, even though it possesses several, aren't very well thought out or executed. Additionally, after my shoulder surgery, I opted to return to my backpack for ergo reasons...it was more comfortable on my shoulders. The backpack is so much better designed and executed. Every feature on the backpack has purpose. I really like mine and have beaten it to death. Not sure it looks great with business casual attire, any moreso than any other backpack, but it definitely works as designed and is much more comfortable than my Filson 257. I no longer care what others think, when I, at 47, wear a backpack. It just works.

Here's a link to the pack I use: Mountainsmith Explore Pack (http://www.mountainsmith.com/products.asp?productId=253&categoryId=46&subCategoryId=0&subCategory2Id=0)

I have the new Rapha Backpack. It is exceedling high quality and made of bomb proof cordura. It does not have a lot of BS pockets and such-- just what is actually needed. The waist belt stores away-- nice touch, I don't like them, and they tend to damage jerseys. It is also easily fitted with a hydration system in desired. The rain cover comes with the new backpack and stores in its own zipp pocket in the bottom. Most awesome pack I have ever owned-- highly recommended....

How's the laptop compartment? Is it fully padded and secure?

So I think I've limited my selection to the Brenthaven Slimpack, Rapha backpack and the Mission Workshops Sanction. The Chrome bags are possibly in the running too. Still debating which one offers the best balance of laptop security, storing other items like a couple of notebooks, calculator, phone, power cords and a Kindle. I appreciate all of the feedback. Keep it comin'!

No offense guys but that Rapha pack should sell for under $100 judging from the design, fabric, and country of manufacture. It's basically an updated and shrunken 1980's travel pack made with water-resistant, not waterproof, Cordura and manufactured in Asia. The Osprey or Mountainsmith mentioned earlier are a much better buy. If you like to spend money, the Mission Shop gear is really well designed, uses top quality fabric, and is made in the USA.

Osprey's packs are top quality and the price reflects their country of manufacture. I haven't used a Rapha pack but have examined one and wasn't impressed.

I disliked my Rapha backpack but must admit I used it for an everyday backpack as well as its intended purpose as a commuting / touring bag.

The quality of construction was nice and the reflective details worked. The downside were the cloth pull tabs easily pulled off and tore from their respective zipper (Rapha were quick to send me replacements) and the lack of bottle pouches found on most backpacks, albeit not specific commuting / touring bags, is something I missed. I also felt the straps were lacking in padding (compared to my 'light duty' and somewhat comparable North Face backpack) and rather uncomfortable especially with a heavy load.

I wouldn't buy another one as I see no real advantage over a regular backpack, other than it being something that would match my Rapha kit (which I don't own). It does look nice though.

Have any of you ever heard of Rickshaw bags? They have some pretty interesting designs. The Skinny Commuter is interesting and it's pretty cool that you can stow the straps and use the handle like a sue-do briefcase.

The Rapha backpack kills it in style points but I like my patagonia fuego (http://www.patagonia.com/us/product/fuego-pack-32-liter-backpack?p=47920-0-189) for pure function. I would think that for work the Rapha will be sufficiently functional. After all, no one is saying use this pack for a 1-2 day outing. I use victorinox (http://www.swissarmy.com/us/product/Travel-Gear/Collections/Architecture-3-0/Acropolis/31322101) for work. Think I got mine on a REI blowout for $80.....works superbly

At least check them out before you buy something from China.

Thanks Bob - they look nice. But the pictures don't all enlarge so it's tough to get a sense for what the interiors of the bags look like. The two strap work pack, citizen and the swift look like good ones. I might give them a call tomorrow to get some more info.
