40% price increases expected on major brands at the end of the month. We bought ten jars this week to beat the increase.

There was an investing book 20 years ago that pointed out you could often make better returns by these sorts of moves than by investing but few people did so. Most of the time it's not really worth the effort, but the effort here was so minimal it made no sense not to do it.

Does PB have a shelf life? I'm tempted to buy a couple/three jars myself but for the two of us they will probably be a several year supply.

Can't speak to the blended stuff, but the natural brand I buy has a sell-by date 11 months out.

Uh oh. PB and homemade J is a winter staple around here. We buy the grind-your-own stuff at our coop, which seems like it would be similarly affected. I will stock up tomorrow!

I already have a year's worth of jam made and am canning plums this evening. So if there is a national jam shortage we are all set.

ditto - five bucks a jar at wholefoods - not cheap.

I have noticed that the mixed nuts (no more than 50 % peanuts) that I buy have been going up - used to be $1.99 for a can - now up to $3.45.

What inflation?
The Bernank just announced that the new peanut butter on shelves next month is 40% better than the old peanut butter. Paul Krugman seconded the idea and thought a 60% price increase would be even better.
There, feel better? We can continue to report no consumer inflation

It doesn't seem to be about inflation:

"What's to blame for this sticky situation? The intense heat and drought that hit the southern U.S. this year, said John Beasley, a professor of crop physiology and management at the University of Georgia.
"It was just unmerciful, and we had a lot of problems setting the crop," he said. "I literally walked some fields that had zero yield."

Yeah, everyone better buy 10 jars right away. Sure, It make take you a couple of years go go through it but in the end you'll save almost $10 ;)

have you ever tried the locally produced 'teddie' brand of peanut butter? it's the best tasting one i've ever found. and i like that it's local too.

That's my brand. Agreed, it's excellent.

BTW, that almost $10 will be reaped in under 6 months for me, at a cost of reaching out and putting more jars in the cart. I could NOT do it because I laugh at giant price increases, but then an entire school of economic theory would be out the window and I just couldn't bear that.

inflation is not price inflation ... it is fed reserve shopping coupon dilution.

Our private central control corporation continues to create Trillions upon Trillions upon Trillions out thin air.

Banks, then using the Ponzi scheme of "fractional reserve" create up to
10 times that, also out thin air.

We, the people, are diluted with phoney money.

It's called frn-boarding.

Drats. I thought it was expensive already. I did try to make my own with my blender but the motor wasn't up to it and died.

just a thought...

if the fed prints up a bunch of money and then buries it in a field somewhere, there is no inflation...

similarly, as the printed money just sits on a bank's balance sheet, with low demand for loans, and incentives to just keep it on the balance sheet, there is very little inflation...

monetary inflation should take into account the amount of credit extended as well as money supply to be a more useful concept....imho.

by this definition, with credit contraction, there can be deflation...which we are going in and out of....

and now back to peanuts and price inflation...if i'm paying more, i'm going macadamia butter....

Peanut Butter, Nutella, and banana sandwiches are a staple for my kids lunches.

Just went to Costco yesterday, and they were all out of their house brand organic peanut butter. My guess is they could not get it produced at their price point so are not going to have it for awhile....

Well, I guess its not bad, and possibly good, in moderation. But pretty high in calories. Probably a bad idea to sit down in front of the TV with a jar of it.. :)
