hugi hubs?

I got to thinking on that C'Dale post- Those coda 900's were hugi 240 hubs and 135mm 28h models can be picked up for less than $50.00 on the bay.

Can I just re-space the rear with a new end cap and end up with a really nice and equally cheap set of wheels for the commuter?
