Here's my issue. I bought a CSI when I wasn't 100 percent committed. It's in super condition but I know me and if I'm going to build it up well then it needs to be repainted. Should I give the job to Serotta or another top level painter? I'm not into the resell value thing but what should I do?

It's a 1997 25th year CSI. Overall the frame is really cherry.

Joe's close enough if he can fit it in. Keith's not too far north. Else the long cross-country slog back to the mothership.

Can't go wrong with any of those options.

What color Jack?

Peter,
Keith who?

Color is a deep maroon. It's very nice but I'll change it to something different for sure.

Keith Anderson in Portland, Oregon. He painted my Steelman XCr Di2 bike, which is in the gallery and also here http://www.steelmancycles.com/Bike%20of%20the%20week.html. I highly recommend him.

you could sell it to me :) and I won't repaint it. One part joking but also dead serious, I will take it off your hands.

Come on! What is it you are asking? :p

From what many tell us, you have more than a couple of very nice bikes. So I would also think that you know most of all the first rate painter's names.

J.Bell
Cycleart
both Spectrums

and many, many more.

As far as, should you ride it like it is? Only you can answer that!

I feel very sure that it will be very nice when you get it done. Please post pics both before and after.

my personal opinion is that it does not need to go back to Serotta for a great paint job. i would pick any of the great names mentioned above, unless you want something very elaborate and super specialized, any of them will do an excellent job.

http://www.sanchezpaintshop.com/ Jason is the guy who paints all of the Ellis bikes, the best there is hands down. I say that after seeing everyones paint mentioned and spending my whole life around paint.

Joe Bell is second to none and you can drive down to his shop with the frame eliminating the expense and RISK of round trip shipping plus having a good time in San Diego.

slight thread drift

maybe it doesn't matter but there are some big price differences in some of the shops being recommended here. Anyone have an opinion on who the best deal is?

Allan Wanta seems to be good and quite a bit less than some of the people mentioned here.

Some of these places also have long wait lists as well which might be worth considering.

Jack,
I know price isn't that big of a deal, but I've seen and heard great things about Allan Wanta both in affordability and workmanship... he is within a day's round trip...

There is also spectrum powderworks. They do a lot of work for DeSalvo and my buddy got his IF repainted by hem and it looks amazing. They do powder or liquid paint.

I am sure any pro would do fine work, just find some one worth your cash.

Thanks guys for the insight.
Yes I know about JB Etc. but I was also looking for other painters that maybe have a little less wait time. I've only had to do 1 repaint so I'm limited with paint experience.

After my ride today I think I've decided to unload the frame and fork if anyone is interested.

Jack,

I've had Joe paint a few of my bikes and Keith has done two. Keith's work is fantastic and his wait time as of a few months ago was something like 4 or 5 weeks. My JB paint took about 4 or 5 months...Joe is wonderful if you have the time to wait (assuming he hasn't slowed down), otherwise, Keith's the man.

How about Russ Pickett of Air Art in Chico California?
He paints for Steve Rex and others- non-internet guy so he flies under the radar.
Paint jobs are reasonable price, pretty speedy and look great.
PM me if you want his digits.

Hey Jack,

Interesting connection with Russ Picket. It looks like does the paint work for Hampsten...

This quote is taken from here (http://pelotonmagazine.com/Artisans/content/17/913/Hampsten-Cycles-Part-II)

Who does your paint?
Mostly Russ Pickett at Air Art. But leave him alone, please, because he’s mine.

Thanks Keith.
Decision is made I'm rolling the frame and fork. Again if anyone is interested please let me know. Frame is still in wrapping.
My new Hampsten will again be the infamous ti silver original color.

Another plus for Allan Wanta in Carlsbad. He's a great painter and easy to work with nice guy to boot.
I sent him another frame 2 days ago for a paint job, it'll be my 3rd or 4th from Allan. Price is right, quality is very high and turnaround time is incredible. He also makes all his own decals for anything and everything.

Keith is not remotely close to Portland Oregon. He's located in Grants Pass OR which is 5hrs south of Portland, above Ashland.

If you've ever done any sort of painting (in any medium) where precision is involved, you'll appreciate that $540 is worth every penny if it's done right. Any by "right" I mean from prep to final buffing.

Not cheap, for sure. But, for a proper job, that sounds about right at the minimum for an elegant 1-color prep & paint with maybe a little xtra detail here & there.

Gorgeous - and it better be for $540!!!

I have two Ellis frames he painted and you will not find orange peel even on the canti studs or rear brake bridge. I work in auto body... Think of it this way we charge $60 a hour for basic collision paint a custom shop gets $100 a hour... For each hour of paint time that is billed we charge $30 a hour for materials and buffing is extra. Look at it this way a car bumper pays 3 hours to paint a 1 hour to clear coat so you have $360 for paint time and material no buffing. I should mention there is no priming or taping on new bumper covers either.

+10 on Alan Wanta. He did an outstanding job on my '85 Merckx professional, and it came out exactly as ordered. Nice guy, relatively fast turnaround time & I'm unable to find a flaw in the finish.
