How come all the helmet nazis aren't jumping all over the fact that levi isn't wearing a helmet in the Specialized commercials?

you have a good point but i think "...nazis" is not the best characterization.

JohnS...I have used codeword "YogiBear" to replace "SS" in the past with a fair amount of success. You might try....

my guess on why no helmet...if he was wearing helmet, he would be less recognizeable...i'm sure the client -- specialized -- wanted every viewer to know it was really levi...thus no face-obscuring helmet...just a guess...based on years of experience. :D

Silly. He rides a Specialized. A helmet won't do any good.

.... and dad spent a good five minutes trying to explain to him that it was wrong to not for Levi to not wear a helmet (which I truly believe -- both from a marketing sense and a safety sense), that he (my son) has to wear his helmet even if this guy on TV isn't wearing one, etc. Commercials have an impact and specialized in my opinion made a very large mistake by not having him wear his helmet.

And as my wife observed the night before, (besides noting him not wearing his helmet) they also make him seem like a jerk, especially in the short version of the commercial. lance, in the marketing imaging world, has time for all sorts of people but some guy no one has heard of can't stop for a few moments to help his sponsor make a commercial??!? messed up image.

Yeah... I agree... the same concept could have been used and not make him look so unsimpathetic... Weak marketing... Makes him look snobbish... and I don't even know the guy...

Levi's wife is hot, oops we're talking about helmets, I forgot. I like the commercial. My nephew must be on his way to juvenial delinquecy cuz he never asks me why people shoot one another in the movies.

perhaps (I dont know) he has a different helmet sponsor and they dont want to be in this commercial?

bill,

if you have a 4 yr. old nephew and he's watching shows were people get shot,
1. that may not be the wisest tv choices
2. i'm positive he's asking 'somebody' why these people are shooting each other. he might be asking you and you're just not hearing or he's asking mon and dad later. i have never been around 4 year olds how aren't asking 'why' about peoples motivations, especially with things that are contrary to their basic teachings (wear your helmet when you ride, don't hit - or shoot? - other people, etc.)

that series of levi/specialized commercials is making fun of lance
and his shez-u-al. knowing this, i find the levi ads quite humorous,
especially when his wife shuts the door late @ nite on the film crew.

did you explain to your kiddos that a helmetless adult, not in a bike
race, in general, is law abiding?

tho there are exceptions, such as some gov't. parks...

you might want to edit your sig line (but be careful you don't advocate people exposing their "beasts" to you :D )

Ah, spelling isn't my forte. But then if i had paid attention in school I wouldn't be working on saturdays either.

Levi's team does wear a different brand helmet so I can understand Specialised not wanting it in their ads. people take things on T.V. way too seriously. We read to our kids a lot but they still like the mutant turtles and they haven't asked for nunchucks for Christmas yet. I am thinking about getting them into a martial arts class though, I like the philosophy behind it.

Here is the complete response from Specialized when I ask them why Levi did not have a helmet on for the commercials.

Thanks for your feedback concerning the OLN ads featuring Levi.

We at Specialized encourage everyone to wear a helmet whenever and wherever they ride. However Levi chose not to wear one on the one day we were able to video him. The TV spots really were done with out any rehearsal whatever and the crew shot Levi exactly as they found him. Levi is a professional cyclist, the decision to wear a helmet (or not) is his, and we respect that choice. When you see him in the Tour or at other races, Levi always (as far as I've seen) has his helmet on.

Thanks again, JB

I think he should have worn his helmet, and Specialized is the "boss" they should have requested it and he should have complied. All in all not the end of the world but a poor choice I believe.

As for the content of the spot I thought it didn't do a very good job of making the point they were trying to make. I could see how many people would incorrectly perceive his attitude as stand-offish. I did a spot for the USOC a few years ago that got the same point across but with more humor (IMO).
