I have an early lightspeed ti road frame with early generation shimano 105 brakes, i wondering if i cud fit a 30 mm tire on this set up ,as the only way to get to work is over broken pavement ,broken bottles nails lol etc ,looking for softer ride.

measure the clearance around the tires you have in there now and you will have a good indication how much bigger you can try.

I'd say chances are poor. You might be able to fit a genuine 25mm, which would at least help.

I had a similar set-up on my 1980 Bianchi. I used Conti 4 Seasons 28mm with room to fit. Additionally it was my commuter in NYC and my only flat occured when the rim tape somehow shifted.

But as stated 28mm is as large as you can go but sizing in tires have been inconsistant to say the least.

The biggest I've been able to use with caliper brakes was 28mm Gatorskins. With those, I still had to smack the wheel sharply to get the tire past the brake pads (caliper quick release open and brake lever quick release open).

The critical dimension may be from the top of the tire to the bottom of the fork crotch.

yep. and how far away from the rim the brake bridge is brazed in the rear.
