All set ready to mount a pair of Zero's to the Speedplay specific Lake 236 with carbon soles. The instructions say that the carbon sole protector kit ($10) is necessary...is this really the case?

I've heard of people cutting out a protector plate from a plastic milk jug or a coke can. The issue is that the pedal body can contact the carbon sole and slowly abrade away at it.

If you don't use them, than your pedals will be rubbing directly on the bottoms of your shoes, and will quickly wear a groove, and you will develop play. $10 is a small price to pay, though if you are handy you could buy a sheet of metal or plastic and cut out your own with snips.

Plastic milk jug material works great. I can get a whole season from one pair. Just cut the material to shape with scissors and make bolt holes with a paper punch.
