I caught a glimpse of the cover of the current New Yorker magazine. Tour de France riders are coming towards the viewer, a yellow jersey prominently in front. Behind them is a very long stretch of road, almost endless, and from the perspective of the viewer, it's hard to tell if the racers are climbing, descending, or on the flat. Riding in the opposite direction, apparently on a collision course with the racers, is a bike messenger. He has a heavy chain around his waist, a messenger bag, a whistle in his mouth, and the drivetrain is on the left side.

I thought the juxtaposition of profesional racers and a messenger was rather clever.

a bicycle in one way shape or form has been in the
cover art of the magazine over 100 times since 1928.
i have collected original issues since the early 80s and
have all of them. all of them.

there was a time i tried to compile digi pics of the
covers and get a site going, but i gave up.

here is the effort to date:

in the meantime, i decided that scanning is better.

yeah - i love my collection. i have duplicates, and
multiples of duplicates, and if the place were to
vaporize, the magazines would be the first things
i'd grab.

hey - thanks for reading!

The cover...that's so NYC. Messenger culture prevades much of the city.
E-twizzler - Queen and I share a subscription to the mag with mom. when she is done with it she drops it off at our house and this is kind of cute...she writes in HUGE magic marker on the front (blasphemy) Queen's name and on the cover of Science Mag. (which we also share) she write my name...so that we don't fight over who gets it first. How cool are mom's...and sandbox rules?
