View Full Version : Shimano 9-speed RDs with 10-speed cassettes, will it work?

Would this hybrid drivetrain work?

I've successfully used the Jtek Shiftmate on various bikes to combine Campy Ergo shifters with Shimano rear derailleurs and cassettes.

But the Shimano parts have always been 9-speed.

Would I be able to use a 9-speed Dura-Ace rear derailleur, mid-cage, with a 10-speed Ultegra cassette, 11x28?

So, bottom line: How well do 9-speed Shimano rear derailleurs work with 10-speed Shimano cassettes?

Also, seeing the related thread now, (http://forums.thepaceline.net/showthread.php?t=97294) do I need a 10-speed chain for a 10-speed cassette? Or can I use a 9-speed chain?

Thanks,

Dave, who thinks a drivetrain with 48/34 chainrings and a 10-speed cassette that's 11x28 could be very useful

You will need a 10sp chain. Shimano 9sp and 10sp derailleurs have the same geometry, so there's not any effective difference. Mix and match.

You will, of course, need 10sp shifters.

It'll work just fine, a '9s' rear der with a 10s STI shifter.

Match the chain to the cogset in terms of speeds. A 9s chain will work poorly on a 10s cogset and vice versa.
