It looks like fun but craziest bike race on earth is a little overstated.

My then-fiancee and I visited Bhutan last fall and traveled the length of that so-called road, twice. It's funny to see the article call it "the only fully-paved" road in the country: it's a constant construction zone, with landslides and wash-outs demanding continual work by (mostly Indian) laborers, with many dirt patches interspersed with rough asphalt. It's nominally 3 meters wide, for two directions of traffic, but some of the monster trucks traversing this road are about that width, so you always have to pull over. Average speed for us was 25 mph (in a car). And the article is right about the dogs and cows... oh, and yaks above 10,000 ft.

The only cyclists we saw were three European tourists who were dropped off at the top of a pass and coasted down... still hair-raising, as it was raining. The mixture of gravel, mud and cow manure on the uneven pavement couldn't have been good for traction.
