where do bikes go to die ?
in big cities
chained to a fence light post or sign

dead on the side of the road
left chained to slowly rust away

In the Netherlands, where I'm from, lot's of em get tossed into the canals. I've also seen quite some bikes that we would consider absolture junk being riden with fervour in places like Morocco...no rusting away in piece...ridden till they fall apart and then repaired

Many years ago I fished a bob jackson from a stream in Ealing London. The council was working on the embankments and had dropped the levels a bit.
Very mild rust had set in but it was serviceable (sp). Someone might still be riding it as it was too big for me.

I've known of people dropping off their nice race bike at the shop for a tune up and deciding to quit the sport while it was there and never come back for them. Those were the bikes we would ride down to the coffee shop at lunch.

speaking of old bikes, i was in Madison, WI last year for my brother's graduation, and I've noticed that a local bike shop chain would go on UW Madison's campus and collect old bikes that were left behind by students, and then the shop would paint the bikes complete red and loan it out for free to who ever needs them. i thought that was a real neat way to reuse and rework.

coulda been worse. Imagine if you dredged up a Ju 88 which had been there since the war?

Old bikes in some places get a coat of whitewash and live out their days as ghost bikes.

Around here many of them adorn walls and fences and municipal 'art' displays for the Tour Downunder. Doesn't matter what condition they're in.
