I rode with a guy from my neighborhood who has a new take on using downtube style shifters rather than full STI. He says he hasn't been able to get used to STI shifting, so his solution is pretty darned unique as far as I know.

Anyway, a few photos are worth a lot o my words. And his Serotta CRL is pretty sweet looking too. The bike is built with a DA7400 group.

did he drill holes in the bars to mount the shifters?

That set up looks about par for the course from a guy who is also riding a bike that is way too small for him.

Looks like a Kelly Take-Off, but not as useful.

Another good solution is turning the DT levers into barends with the Jagwire adapters. $30.

The bike looked pretty good underneath him to be honest. And besides, the snarky comment is a little embarrassing since I forwarded the link to him.

Why not just use DT shifters?

not unique at all

these were suntour's answer to sti shifting in the early 90s (last gasp of suntour)

I don't understand either of those solutions! If you can use those you can certainly use STI and it doesn't look like an abortion! If STI isn't your thing there's DT shifters.
I'm not sure I understand all the criticism about the size of his bike. Some folks prefer a smaller frame for more saddle to bar drop and a little more ridgid frame.....so what.

2nd that

The "sausage link" shift adapter was made by WTB for Suntour shifters in the mid 80s. Very simple and efficient. They also made a "multi-mount" for XT thumb shifters which were more common. I ran them for years and loved them.

Stash and CSI owner,
Sorry about the snarkiness. It's just an opinion. Although I will point out that maybe STI will feel better with professional bike fitting.

a lot of pros ride bikes that are on the small side and use long seatpost and stems. I happen to have one bike with a 13 cm stem and long seatpost showing...all good!

The fellow that mentioned the Suntour Command shifters nailed it. Those things worked great, wish I still had some.

Point taken. I think he just likes his set up as is. The guy has been riding for a looooooong time.

I like it. One of the great things to me about a bicycle is you can set them up to make them work for YOU.

Not my thing, but it's always fun to see someone with a setup like that drop a guy riding a Cervelo S5 with Di2 like he lost his chain.

That Campy Ti seatpost looks like it's way past the Minimum Insertion line...

What kind of curved stem is that? Looks a little like bad porn. I don't think I could look down on that while riding and not feel a little impotent.

Not the direction I would go, but I dig the ingenuity.

Btw, some of the fastest guys I rode with were crusty vets who rode old steel. It was always a hoot when someone showed up riding the latest and greatest with attitude only to get dropped like a bad habit by the guys on the relics.

those levers look like campy 10 clone tektros which makes this set up the ultimate in campy-shimano hybridization.
