View Full Version : Seatpost clamp kerfuffle

I have a steel frame with a 28.6 seat tube (fits a 28.6 FD clamp) but the seatpost clamp is in between sizes...a thomson 28.6 clamp won't fit on the tube (just barely) and a 29.8 thomson clamp needs a shim to fit but just about pinches together upon tightening. So, my question is...is there a clamp size in between these two? or is it paint build-up? should I sand down a bit of the paint to get the 28.6 to fit?
anybody else experience this problem?
any insight is always valued by yours truly.
cheers

It's possible the manufacturer of your frame has a proprietary clamp for your frame.

You'd be better off using the 28.6mm clamp and sanding the I.D. of the clamp rather than removing paint from the frame, which would rapidly invite rust development.

Have you measured the O.D. of the seat tube at the clamping area? Is it possible to spread the 28.6mm clamp to install it?

Does the frame use a 27.2mm seatpost? Some that do have a slightly tapered (externally butted?) seat tube, 28.6 at the FD, but slightly larger at the seat lug like yours...

Just a thought: will the 28.6 fit if you spread it a little? Once clamped it may squeeze the paint somewhat.

haven't tried anything other than putting the clamp on.
the frame does take a 27.2 post.
I like the idea of just spreading or working with the inner diameter of the 28.6 clamp...

My sympathies. It's been awhile since I've known anyone experiencing a "kerfuffle". Damn annoying too.

Good luck finding a resolution.
