View Full Version : Does anyone make anything more elegant than Shimano DT cable adjusters?

I building up a winter bike and it's the first time in a while that I've built up a bike with DT shifter bosses. So as I was putting on the Shimano cable stop guides (after taking off the ugly gray plastic front adjuster ring) I though that someone should make a nicer looking set of these. Something CNC'd or just cleaner. Anyone know of anything?

That said, I found a cleaner-looking set of Campy adjusters on ebay but I don't want to wait a month for them to be shipped from Canada. Does anyone have clean set laying around or know where I can find any?

I'm sure Old Potatoe has a pile of Campy DT adjusters sitting around...I normally never have trouble finding them at the LBS though. I'm sure Ben @ Velomine has them as well...

I think the DA version with the flipper lever is about as "elegant" as this kind of thing gets. I've never cared for the various Campy versions.

If you want to dress them up, consider color anodizing or painting the bodies to match your frame.

I bought some Campy ones from Universal. The ones i got were black but it looks like they only have silver now.

Campagnolo ones are gone..I use shimano ones, sourced from QBP, since all the Waterfords/Gunnars have DT shift bosses. The shimano ones with the barrel adjuster on both sides, not the DA lever-thingy.

And what is the purpose of the rear flipper lever?

I haven't been able to figure that...

David Kirk use to have some pretty sweet looking brass ones. Dunno if they are still around but i think so.

Maybe it's just me, but I've found that style hard to adjust on the fly because I can't get a grip. I see that Kirk has knurled ones, and I think those might be better.

You have to make sure Kirk's will fit your bike. I inquired and they would not fit my 2007 Serotta Legend because of incorrect size.

This:

The flipper allows you to make very quick, incremental adjustments to your RD tension on the fly. Since cables don't generally shrink, the flipper only is there to add tension. It is not there to set up the bike (that's why the RD has a barrel), just fix a problem during the ride.

For that purpose, they work much better than a little barrel.

How are Kirk's barrel adjusters going to work on a downtube shifter boss?

I drilled a bolt out once...I needed to finish building a commuter in the middle of the night. Certainly not elegant as it was, but something along those lines might be good.

You are right. They will not fit onto shifter bosses.

Velo-Orange sells cheap Dajia cable stops that with some hot Dremel on metal action could be made to look cool.

If you find the Campy's-- jump on them! Getting very hard to find.... Campy is King (not to start a fight)....

Are you talking about these plastic things?

Those aren't too bad looking but a bit rough. I like that they tell you that they come dinged and pitted.
Again, you would think that someone could CNC something clean and sleek with perhaps some anodized adjusters or some nice Kirk brass adjusters mounted in them.

Has anyone just replaced the cheap plastic adjusters (Shimano), and tried screwing in the Kirk brass ones?

WHOA THAT'S NICE! Full pic of bike PLEASE.

And yes Kirk adjusters are the way to go. They're M5 size, fyi. New ones have little knurled/grippy machining, very swank. I have the prior gen version, smoother with a few machined notches like what's posted on the Colnago below.

+1 for Kirk's brass.

colorful ones from Token replace the adjuster in either the Campy or Shimano plain Janes?

I have these on my Soma.

I have no idea who the maker is or where I got them...found them in the bottom of the parts bin.

Those Token adjusters are M5 (I had email exchange w/the company to confirm), yes will fit Shimano but I don't know about Campy--isn't their housing just slightly larger than 4?

They are pretty cool and have a reasonably deep barrel for the housing ferrule to sit in.

I've seen just about every friggin' adjuster there is....in my quest for something as remotely nice as Kirk's but in an M6.

In terms of M6, I found these ti doodads at torontocycles.com, and pilfered the springs from an existing Shimano barrel adjuster.

Really? I have any extra pair lying around, NOS 2007ish - alloy no less, not painted black. I offered them to somebody else on the forum last month, but they decided they wanted the shimano version (to match their build).

Not for downtubes, but +1 for the Kirk version being nice. Strong uses them on his frames too.
