I guess all it takes is to drive home around 4 or 5pm to get the feeling that riding your bike on a Friday when traffic is going home is not such a good idea.

People are much too focused on driving rudely and hurriedly getting home to think that a bike ride in that environment would be much fun.

Just an observation.

i commute 90% of the time, and today i left the office around 3 and took the most urban route i can into boston. it was MUCH more pleasant than my usual 8am/5pm trips along the same route.

traffic during the high volume commuting hours around greater boston is not fun to deal with on a bike, but neither is a 15 mile, 45 minute drive on the highway during that same time. i'll take the ride option almost everytime.

It's noticeable even out in the sticks. Yesterday I was trying to get to the bank before 5PM closing, so took US 34. Usually people will give me most of the lane when passing, but got buzzed several times. Riding after dark is safer.

Is US 34 the extension of Ogden Ave. from Chicago to Oswego, etc?

Friday afternoon is the worst commute of the week, 11 miles through suburban neighborhoods and still fear for my life.

34 is Ogden, it is scary to drive let alone ride any part of it.

I had a similar experience at about 2:30 one afternoon, then I realized that the high school nearby just let out.

I've had long commutes in the past and I feel your pain. I've been commuting by bike for about a year now and it makes such a difference in ones sanity.

Man, I wouldn't commute by bike on my typical route even at 5:30 am, much less at 4 or 5 pm on Friday.

At the very least you get a lot of expletives, and "you're number one" gestures. I'm sure over time you would eventually get hit.

I don't commute by bike, but enjoy bike rides in the evening after work. That said, I never go for a ride on Friday evening. I tried it a few times, and felt lucky to return home in one piece. The roads feel extremely unsafe on Friday evenings.

My 10 mile commute consists of 1 mile of road, 9 of dedicated bike track. I consider myself very fortunate.
