I sort of remember this being 2.5 inches into the frame, is that right? Moots has no minimum insertion line.

Might this be the polished puppy I sent you?

Essentially, the basic rule of seat post insertion is that you want enough seatpost inserted so that it goes past (not necessarily by a lot) the TT/ST junction. This buttresses the seatpost, giving you enough stability. On old lugged frames that rarely had more than a centimeter of seat tube showing above the TT, 1.5inches could feasibly do it. 2 makes me more confident.

I actually have 2 that are in the 2.5 to 3" range, both make it through the top tube, but just. Both are on steel bikes thought, so I worry a bit less. I just wanted to check.

IIRC stock or fresh Moots ti posts show a line in the shaft between the blasted shaft and brushed insertion section. 2 to 2-1/2' should be sufficient unless you are >6'-2" and pushing 240.

Hmmm...6'3", 225. That blasted line is entirely inside the frame, do I need to assume more post inside due to my massive stature?

'General' rule of thumb is twice the top tube width, below the bottom of the top tube/seat tube junction, for the end of the seat post.

Hmmm, thanks Peter, looks like I need to run a WTT post for my 220 length laybacks, anyone running a 280 or 340 who doesn't need the length, I'll pay all shipping.

Zach, will the Moots post accommodate oversized and/or ovalized saddle rails?

Not sure, anyone? What saddle? I'll look into it.
