I must be a weakling with this crowd. I run a 48-34 front with a 12 tooth high gear. Its the same as the old 52/13. Their are some real gear grinders in this crowd.

What I ride is mostly due to what parts filter down to me. A 50-13 is plenty for me, but there are a lot more cranks around with 53 big rings. 11 and 12 tooth small cog cassettes seem a lot more common than 13s too. I have a couple of the Campy 10 14-23 cassettes, but I wish they were 14-27 or 28.

it just depends on the terrain. I do a lunch time ride up 1200 ft and hit 50 mph on the way down. without the 11, I would be slower on the descent and my companions would ride away from me. I might be able to make do with a 12, but a 13, I might be able to hang on to 42 mph. its not that I spin to 50, but I need to accelerate on the descent and tuck to get to 50.

I'm happy with high gears in the 95-98" range, 48x13 or 46x13, same equivalent gearing as 52x14.
