Now that I've purchased this Lemond TI Victoire that's Ultegra equiped. I need pedals. I need shoes, heck I need lots of things. But for now it's pedals. I'm 6'3 225 and really want to walk in the shoes without tap dancing. Shoes should be about a 47-49 since I wear 13 - 14. I have rt foot pain from a previous break of my 5th metatarsal. I will ride 30 to 70 miles at a time with few centuries. Any suggestions out there? Just getting back into it all.

Ultegra SPD-SL pedals are really nice. You'll be tapping a bit with the cleats, but the softer plastic nibs make it quite safe for walking around when hunting for food and drink.

Knowing full well that I may get riduculed for this, here goes:

If the walking thing is really a big deal to you, the Sidi shoes in MTB version (Dominator - thanks Vax, I was blank) are very similar to the road versions. You could then use an older Ultegra type pedal (without the walking plastic tabs) and be good to go. Clipping in will be ever so slightly more difficult (at least at first), the shoes are comfortable (assuming they fit you, but if not, any MTB shoe could work), and you can walk comfortably.

The Sidis fit me well and I now have numerous pairs and actually use the above setup some with good results.

Here's a thought...if you want to be able to walk and ride. Sidi Dominators with SPD road pedals. There's not much weight penalty at all and if you like to ride and walk it's the perfect solution. My wife and I often use Dominators on the road tandem.

There's a new SPD road pedal too which looks a little odd but still fairly light and gives much more of a platform fro those who used to get "hot spots".

2nd the Ultegra or DA SPDSLs and SIDIs. Make sure someone who really knows what they are doing sets up the cleats. Happy riding. - Matt

Guacamole: Good luck and happy riding with your new bike!

I've used SIDI shoes for years and really like them. They fit me well and seem to last a long time. I recently switched from Speedplay to the Shimano 'Lance' pedals and like them better. The cleats are very easy to walk in and very stable when walking.

If walking is a priority, top end MTB shoes are plenty stiff enough these days. I'd go with MTB shoes and pedals (time's or 959's)...

I've used Speedplay Frogs for a couple years and like them a lot. I use them with Diadora Voyager shoes which makes for good riding and walking.

Here's another vote for Shimano 959's and mountain bike shoes.

These are the new SPD "road pedal. It looks odd but it really is a nice design. One sided entry and lighter than the mountain pedals. The wider platform supports the shoe much better than the mountain SPD pedals. Use with a mountain shoe and it really is a good alternative road set up for those who ride but like to be able to walk and not waddle.

Thanks for all the response! Anyone in the Albuquerque / Santa Fe area offering good buys on the right pedals / shoes for big foot? 13 or 14
By the way, this site is very good to new users like myself. Big Dan, back in the 70's I was a total bike freak, crossing the country 4 times living like Jack Kerouac on a bike. Thought for awhile I'd take myself beyond senior class 2 on my Ron Boi full campy SR bike but it was not to be. I fooled with a Cannondale around 1990 and found the aluminum to be energy assorbing almost as if it was dead. This TI bike is the closest thing I've seen to a De Rosa thin walled steel of 30 years ago. When you'd climb the bike would bounce back at ya, as if it were alive giving back to you, transferring energy to the road. That livliness seams to be there in this Lemond and yet it rides smooth as well, unbelievable! I am just getting back into things being married almost 25 years now wondering where the time went. I'm still waiting for 1984.
