In a bid to get at least some miles in this weekend, and having an invite to a friend's birthday party just outside Keene, NY, in the Adirondack High Peaks, I hied myself up that way today and rode the loop used by the Lake Placid Ironman Triathlon. I went north on NY 9N from Keene to Jay, then turned on 86 over to Wilmington and then toward Lake Placid. Just before Lake Placid I turned on River Road hooked up with hiway 73, and back over to Keene, where I nearly ended up crawling back up the road to the friend's house, which is up on the slopes of Hurricane Mountain.

I encountered these two guys on 9N riding toward Jay and stayed with them for a while. The tri guy's FD wouldn't shift and I loaned them a mini-tool. Neither one of them apparently carries one . . . no comment.

The horizontal is the Ausable(?) River in Wilmington and the vertical is the same river on 86 toward Lake Placid.

Going east on 73 out of Lake Placid . . . classic view of the High Peaks you may have seen on postcards.

The Merckx jersey is almost as nice as the landscape.

. . . you can see a sign like this! Passing entrance to Mt. Van Hoevenberg XC ski complex, where bobsled and many XC events were in the 1980 Olympics.

. . . on the official forum "garage shot." Queen Bee along Rt. 73.

. . . along Rt. 73. This road is truly awful along here. I don't think they've done anything to improve it since the 80 Olympics. Nervous as hell riding along here with whizzing traffic on one side and a jump over a Jersey barrier into the lake on the other.

. . . that goes through Keene.

Beautiful pics - postcard perfect - that was a pretty good ride - how long did it take?
Bet there are some nice trout in the Ausable - ever fish it?
Thanks for posting!

Awesome pics! During that scary part with the whizzing cars on one side, was there at least enough room to ride or was your lane pretty narrow?

From the pic it looks like you had a narrow lane.

. . . but short sections of the barrier thing, so I tried to time it. Wait till it's clear and pedal like hell.

I hope they close the road for the Ironman. I can't imagine 500 or so bikes coming through there without it. And the pavement on 73 is not in good shape--the thought of coming down some of those huge hills on a tri bike with that pavement is scary.

That particular ride is on my "must do" list. One of these days...

. . .is beautiful and in great shape. 86 from Jay to Wilmington is the same. 86 from Wilmington over to Lake Placid/River Road is steep in spots and has some tight spots, but pavement is in good shape.

I just don't understand 73 from LP over to Keen, though. I'd say it's because of budget crunch, but last time I took that road was at least eight years ago and it looks like they've done nothing to it in that time except patch potholes--and not very well. If you do that road be extremely careful with tight spots, bad pavement, and don't let it get too fast on the downhills. Could be real dangerous. I took it real easy.

Nice to see the old Queen Bee again.
I thought she might have been put in the BBDave museum
along with the Zebra Kit.

Nice bike, beautiful scenery. I've been to LP back when I lived in NY, right after the Olympics, it doesn't get more serene and tranquil than that. Thanks for posting!

Love the pics, I really miss being up in the Adirondacks. When I was living in Saratoga I probably spent every other weekend up there, so seeing those pictures brings back lots of great memories.

Did you stick around over the weekend, I hear that Keene got really hammered by Irene?
