How to kiss a podium girl

So I noticed an interesting contrast today in how Robbie McEwen and Lance kissed the podium girls. RM put his cheek next to the podium girl’s cheek and they both puckered and smacked, but neither his nor the podium girl’s lips touched the other’s cheek. Lance, on the other hand, put the front of his lips directly on each of the podium girl’s cheeks whilst puckering and smacking. Now, I’m no expert in podium girl kissing etiquette, having neither raced (nor placed) nor spent a significant amount of time in Europe, but RM’s method seemed more appropriate.

Can someone shed some light on proper the podium girl kissing technique?

Yep, Hincapie married a podium girl and they now have a child...

He knew they are not supposed to hit on the podium girls, but he saw her and decided he had to find SOME way to meet her, so got some third party to introduce them. The rest is history . . . sweet.

but we'll still never get a serious answer. And I actually noticed the same thing - but I was purposefully paying attention to try to learn from it - a few months ago I was in France and was doing the little kissy greeting and we went to the same side and nearly colided. A little embarrasing for me, but now that I've paid attention to podium kissing, there doesn't seem to be a convention for which side to start on, either.

As far as the full contact goes, though, I've never had a European girl (not that there's been a big line) make the full contact smootch on the "unfamiliar" greeting, so I think Robbie's got it right and Lance is borderline perv.

I have a really good friend who's French, and I'll ask her when she gets back from NY next week. My kissy greetings with her have always gone smoothly so etiquette has never come up.

"Generally speaking, the custom for kissing an "acquaintance" in France is on the cheek, three times, starting with the left cheek. In Italy, it's twice, also starting with the left cheek. So in the Giro d'Italia you'll see that most of the Italians will kiss the podium girls twice, and in the Tour de France, most of the French riders will kiss the podium girls three times. But if you win, whatever you do, no kissing on the lips, and definitely no tongue!"
