This is probably too low on anyone's radar to care, but it looks like the GF Presidio, steel CX, is being replaced with an alloy model.

This is a bummer. The Presidio was a cool bike and put people on a [relatively] nice steel bike for not too much. Trek did this a decade ago (or so) when they stopped making Lemonds in Steel.

Eh. Whatever.

Lemond Poprads were steel right to the end in 2008.

Yes, all the other entry steel got gutted, that's all I meant.

Poprad was a nice bike.

Really is too bad that the mid-to-high volume manufacturers have gotten rid of their stock steel framesets, in all disciplines. I guess your average LBS consumer can't be sold on the benefits of steel.

C'mon, it's not like there aren't a butt-load of decent steel options out there from smaller importers/bike companies.

I think of it as less about us and more about people just coming in to cycling and the kids working in the shops. It's like something is getting lost.

If you knew nothing about cycling and went into a shop a decade ago you could see a Ultegra equipped Zurich right next to a lot of other nice bikes and now they don't offer them.

I think is a bummer that you have to know about cycling to know about cycling. Shops are better when there is cool stuff hanging, and frankly if it does not come from a big bike company, people do not see it.

Having the Presidio in the shop forces some kid to explain it to some people. That's better then not having it to sell, and it is more likely to be in a shop then a Zank. All respect to Zank of Course.

I looked at the Presidio before I bought my Poprad and noticed that they were originally a lot like the poprad and then the geometry changed a lot.

I got a GF/trek steel sawyer.

I think that still counts!

People gravitate towards what the pros ride, because they think it's "the best." The problem is there are so many definitions of "best" in cycling (and in life I guess), which is something you only learn with experience.

I agree with you Bob, especially for new cx riders. If people would just give steel a shot off the bat they would be amazed (and thrilled) with overall comfort vs aluminum.

GF is nothing but a babyboomer sellout.

on his videos (hocking his treks) he claims to be this rebel racer for the people guy but when the money man waved the greenbacks in his face he sold out faster than a jersey cathloic school girl on prom night.

just another poster boy for the worst generation

I think Trek made a mistake ending the Lemond steel bikes and earlier editions of the Presidio (Poprad with a different name). I think there are still some people who prefer steel to carbon or aluminum frames.

there are a still a couple options... for completes, Salsa has some options and will have more coming soon for the road I hear... Soma allows for a cheap build with their framesets... while the tubing of either may not be 853, not sure the majority (especially those who would be buying the bikes mentioned above) would know the difference...

Serious question: in a 45 minute cx race, with 40psi in your tires, how much different is a $1500 steel bike going to feel from a $1500 aluminum bike?

if that's all you're doing, then probably not much... but if you ride on trails at all....

it's pretty, I just thought I had read it's kind of pricey.. at least compared with what you can get custom made... but I haven't seen an actual for sale price, so...

I guess that's not bad... still seems a little high to me, but the market shall see I guess... I would be curious how it rides... I've heard nothing but good things about the original ones...

hello,

new to the forum.

I've just recently purchase a poprad, complete with Ritchey component. and i have nothing but good things to say about it. and ever since I've purchased the bike, I've touched anything else in my garage.

i just can't believe it took me well over a year to come around and appreciate the quality of good steel frame.
