8 Speed Drivetrain

I've got a 91 Waterford Paramount running Campy 8sp Record. The chain that was originally on it was a SRAM of questionable vintage. The grouppo looked almost new but the chain didn't.

The SRAM chain was making a little noise so I replaced it with a Dura-Ace 9sp. Shifting is flawless and the noise has been reduced quite a bit but still not as quiet as my Serotta that has 9sp Record with a 9sp Campy chain.

Is this normal or should I be looking for an 8sp chain??

8 speed chains are $15. If you prefer 9 speed that's fine, but you're not gaining anything.

campy 9 speed chain will work on campy 8 gears and will be a lot quieter than others.

I run Sachs 8 speed freewheels on several Campy 8 speed bikes. A nine speed chain will run much quieter with that setup. KMC Z9, Shimano 9 have worked for me. I'm hoarding my C9 chains for my 9 speed Campy bikes, as they are so much more expensive. I just got in from riding my Col. II with Campy 8 speed cassette 1/2 hr. ago. It's got a SRAM PC59 (9spd.), shifts great and is quiet.

I guess I haven't worried much about chain noise since incredibly loud freehubs of the other riders started drowning out everything in creation. But my lowly 8 speed bikes don't seem noisy to me.

Seriously, I sometimes read about folks complaining of chain noise and have no idea what kind of noise they are talking about.
The only time I've noticed noise from a chain was if the front derailleur was not adjusted correctly and the chain was rubbing against the sides of the derailleur.
Other than that I've never had any chain noise the was distracting enough to notice except for a couple of old motorcycles I've owned.
