May need to replace my Chorus BB (square taper). New Chorus seems to run $130, whereas I can get this one for under $40.http://www.amazon.com/Origin8-Campagnolo-Square-Bottom-Bracket/dp/B002I7ICD0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1312989737&sr=8-1
Anyone have any experience with it, especially longevity?

Is the 111 asymmetric, for Chorus/Record triples?

I can't speak as to the longevity, but for that price it shouldn't be too much of an issue. Be careful with the torque wrench because the alloy cups are easily shredded.

Thanks guys. Given that the BB that just wore out is a Campy Chorus I'll give this one a try.
What sort of mileage should one expect from a square taper bottom bracket, assuming 200 lb recreational rider?

That looks like a relabeled Token BB. I have Tokens in 2 bikes and am happy with them so far.

On my regular bikes I use Phil BB's. I hate replacing BB's and this seems to be a solution, albeit not a cheap one!

Nope, 111 symmetrical..for 1994/older doubles, Centaur and below till 2007.

Spend the extra coin and get the Phil Wood and stop worrying about it.

Well, I have a BB from 1988 in my Waterford.....I think you should ask of the ones with cart bearings...3-6 years depending.

Yeah, gave that some thought but ordered the Origin8 for $31 shipped from Velomine. If/when it wears out I think Phil is my next stop, assuming I keep this Campy 9 speed group.

Is it possible the Token units are themselves relabeled Tange units?
I'm been using an Origin 8 bb for 1500 miles with no problems. That's not a lot of miles and I'm a light rider, so take it for what it's worth.
For a 200 lbs rider, I do think it's worth it to get a Phil bb. You might be able to buy four cheaper bbs for the price, but one Phil bb will save the time and labor of multiple removals and installations.

I hope it's not a relabled token BB. Had one of those once and it lasted less than 1000 miles. If this one does the same I'll go Phil, or just get rid of the square taper crank. Never had similar issues with external BBs. I think I wore one out after 4K miles or so and that's it.

The additional hidden cost of the Phil is that you need to get the tools for them as well. You really need two tools and not just one because of the way that the mounting rings work. I use the portable (the one that fits a socket) on one side and the pro (the one with the handle) on the other. Phils need to be torqued in to spec to set them up right and this method, at least in my limited experience, makes it easier to do correctly.

I personally avoid Origin 8 parts as much as possible. They are just not high quality parts at all.

Token makes several levels of square taper BB's.

They are $30 BBs afterall. If ya want 'high quality', get Phil or Campagnolo.

no such thing as a free lunch.
