Fellas,
I need a new set of tubular wheels. I would like something in the low 1400g range with a budget of $600 (excelsports as comparo). Any advice?

FWIW, I weigh 150#, don't race and appreciate the road feel that only comes w/tubs. The rig the wheels will support is a CSi and will replace 1997 Campy Athena dressed to Mavic Reflex w/Revo spokes.

Best,
BDS

Joe Young. http://www.youngwheels.com/

Great wheels -- I've bought about 5 sets over the years, and they last, stay true, all the good things.

And a fine gentleman, too.

You can't go wrong with any of the builders mentioned. You may also want to add Joe Young to your list. I've had wheels built by Vecchios and Joe Young. Solid, well built, and reliable/durable. Looking to get a wheelset built by Ergott (Stan's rims, Alchemy hubs, Sapim CX spokes) soon.

All are reputable and stand behind their product. They know their stuff!!

I have bought two wheelsets from Joe and he's very reasonable about pricing as well. They have stayed true and ride perfectly. +1

Also..I haven't bought from OldPotatoe but after talking to him on the phone ONCE, if I have something specific or I want to go to someone out of state, he is my first option. +1

Cronometro in Madison, WI builds one hell of a good wheel.

So many good recommendations, so little time...

Another +1 for Joe Young, he built me a set of DT Swiss everyday wheels 2 years ago that are as sublime as an everyday wheel could possibly be.

I've heard a number of friends rave about Rob Curtis (Psimet) wheels too. http://www.psimet.com/

Ergott gets a lot of love too. He's on my short list, mostly so we can talk about playing bass while he's building my wheels. :)

Peter White http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/ seems to polarize some folks, but if you're not interested in superlight race wheels his work (that I've seen) is stellar.

A suggestion for anybody you go with. Be able to talk to them so that the agreed upon wheelset is appropriate to you and your needs. 'Some' MO places will build you anything you ask for, like a lot of MO, online type, fill out this form, type places. Like a low spoke count, thin spoke, light rim, alloy nipps, goofy lacing wheelset that they know won't really work, but they will still build it.

All of the builders mentioned in this thread are excellent, but you may have difficulty fitting into your budget with any of them. You could get a set built with Dura -Ace hubs and a good tubular rim for around $600 from either Excel or Colorado Cyclist. Those wheels might exceed your 1400g by a bit, but it would stay within your budget. I've ridden wheels from both companies and had good success with both. The new Dura-Ace 7900 hubs are a little larger flange without increasing weight. If you don't like shimano, Excel and Colorado Cyclist both have good deals on other hubs. If you need for $600 to get you tires too, you may have to drop down to Ultegra hubs. I'm currently riding Ultegra hubs on my 84 Nova Special and like the wheels very much.

They built me a custom set of Zipp 303 tubulars and also handled a replacement when I broke one wheel. Fast, Zipp endorsed, many pro cyclists use them. When I broke my Zipp I sent overnight and they sent back overnight the same day of receipt so the total time was three days from start to finish.

I also have friends who have had like experiences with this company. Very friendly. Call and tell them your weight, style of riding, use, and they will build a super set of any wheel you like. They also make great recommendations for your consideration.
