I really like DA SP-7410 seat posts. I have a lot of them. I broke one this morning at the start of my commute. First time I have had one of these fail. Maybe I should just go with all one piece posts. This post was used so who knows what happen to it in its prior life. I think I got this one from fastvegan.

Owwww.

I have one of these on a fixie. I do not want to imagine breaking a seatpost whilst riding fixed....

So was it uneventful when it broke? Are you still all man?

I would call Shimano customer service - never heard of one of these failing before.

Glad no injury reported.

totally uneventful. Jumped on my bike, seat broke off, both feet slipped right off the pedals onto the ground, all parts are still accounted for. I am not the original owner so I would not expect shimano to do anything about the post. Maybe it was used by a 400 pound cyclocross rider or something.

glad to hear you didn't get hurt -- looks like it could have been a most uncomfortable prostate exam...

I've seen a few of these where the heads loosened in the posts, but I haven't seen that sort of separation before.

Discovery used the Ultegra version of this post because it was one piece and a little stronger without too much of a weight penalty.

i have a few ultegras as well, are you sure they are one piece?sometimes i think i can see a seem. I guess i should use a flashlight and check out the inside. Maybe i am seeing some kinda forging artifact.

I love the look of these posts, but in practice haven't liked them. They scratch WAY too easily and the head has loosened on 2 of the 3 that I have had.

The earlier 7400 series posts are MUCH better imho.

I'm glad that your equipment is all intact! :)

I have one where the head is loose when mounted on a bike. Is there any way to fix or is it now a fancy paperweight?! :( Good Luck!

In my experience it was a paper weight. This was back when I was working in a shop and these were current- that would have been sent back to Shimano for a replacement.

I have an irrational like for these, but it's balanced against my rational love of one piece Kalloy's.

At +67g of bombproofness and over a $100 savings it's hard to argue.

Thanks. It was suggested I call Shimano and did. The guy just laughed and said they haven't made this post in years and have none in stock. Oh well, its now a paperweight and I was lucky enough to substitute it with a Campy Record ti seatpost!

Btw, is that your bike in the picture? Very nice! Good Luck!

Yeah, they haven't been made in some time, and even original owners would be out of the three year warranty by now (unless it was old stock just purchased from a dealer).

Yes, that is one I built. It live in CA now.

That would be interesting. Assuming there are some NOS DA seatposts out there, I suppose that if there was a warranty issue, Shimano could offer to replace with one from their PRO series:

or perhaps with an Ultegra seatpost (assuming they still have some in stock):
