From Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/SerottaSport) ...

"Feeling Lucky. Rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated....just riding along was hit broadside by a full size pick-up that 'didn't see me'...miraculously I was able to use the impact and straight-arm on the hood to throw me a few feet in front of the truck... and have only bruises and contusions to show. The bike was not so lucky as it was fully lodged under the truck...which slowed him down enough to avoid something really ugly. A really lucky day all in all. - Ben

Do you think Campy will warranty those wheels?

Damn! I didn't buy the Serotta Peace of Mind Crash Protection!!!!!"

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Ben, if you're reading, we're glad to hear that you're basically ok, not that anybody wants a bunch of bruises and contusions (or the experience & memory of colliding with a motor vehicle -- not something I enjoyed myself, at any rate).

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

And get yourself a shiny new bike when you are feeling better. The fella you see in the mirror every morning might be able to give you a break on something really good.

Time to test the trade in program. (Just kidding, glad he seems to be doing well).

Wow Ben, that's some nasty looking wreckage! I'm glad that it is just carbon and aluminum that took the brunt of the accident.

BTW- I'm sure that the guy's insurance company is going to have a big surprise coming if they try to argue that bike in question has a five-figure price tag. ;)

No replacement insurance - bummer. Call me and I'll hook you up with a deal.

Get better soon and stay well after that.

That will all buff out.

Glad to hear you are doing well. Looks like the bike took one for the team.

That is a really aggressive position on the hoods of the shifters. Many talk about limber.

I would love to see what would have happened with some Mavic r-sys wheels

I don't think Campy will extend their warranty on the wheels!

And no crash ins. Let do not let it happen again.

Glad you did not get hurt any worse than what you did. Heal well and quickly.

I T-boned a truck once, that pulled out in front of me - I was doing 25+ mph - not fun. I feel your pain . Get well quickly.

Jens is going to get some toughness tips from Ben. :D

Glad your reasonably ok, given the circumstances. Skill and instinct probably helped a bunch.

Tougher than your average pick-up truck.

Hope you're back on the bike soon. Well... not that bike...

Wow, so sorry to hear about your 'accident.' Sobering to realize it can happen to a cycling 'god' as well as the rest of us pack filler. Glad you're ok.

White, orange, or yellow jerseys from now on.

OK, I've been one-upped. Maybe more than one. :D

Ben, glad you're OK. Seriously. (One of my best riding buddies was T-boned by a truck late last year and he may never recover fully.)

Also glad to see you don't ride Fishing Equipment® or The Equipment From The Company Partially Owned By He Who Shall Not Be Named®.

Those Shamals will make great wall art!

Wow

Glad to hear you avoided serious injury. Quick thinking and quick reflexes save the day!

I am amazed that the frame seems to be intact. It speaks volumes to the quality and durability of the bikes.

I can see the classifieds ad now:

"Gently used Record group with matching wheels. Wheels slightly out of true, but could be easily fixed by the local shop. Levers could use a new set of hoods after slight use."

Seriously, sounds like you dodged a bullet. All the best.

I'm happy you weren't seriously hurt or worse. Good thing Ray showed you some moves I taught him. I bet that truck looks worse then that bike. ;)

Every time one of my riders gets hit or crashes and gets taken to the hospital by ambulance the bike winds up going somewhere - nobody is really sure where. Sometimes it winds up at the local police station, sometimes at the fire station, sometime to a local shop. After the crash the focus is on the riders health, not the bike. Some time after the question comes up - where's my bike. Ben was smart enough to put his name on his bike...

I saw the bike yesterday ... It's worse then the picture shows.

More from Ben (http://serotta.com/2011/7/72/Thoughts+on+why+I+didn%E2%80%99t+die+twice+on+July +17+and+what+it+all+means+By+Ben+Serotta.html)

Its almost unbelievable. Back to work and almost back on the bike after 2 days. Oh and this I guess this is too: "But the frame and fork? The fork did not snap and is true. The left rear carbon stay has a crack, but it is intact."

I wish you all the best Ben.

Ben,

Glad to hear you made it through without incident, and that the frame and fork survived! Usually these stories don't have a happy ending, but I'm glad this one does.

Cheers,
Edmund

well, not like that... having one of your bikes was a long goal, I'm proud to ride Serotta, and like those of us who frequent your forum, proud of the company and what it has done for cycling in so many ways. You have a large support group! hope you get better rapidly.

What a champ and sorry that happened. Terrible. This reminds me of a video I saw where a guy does essentially the same thing (stiff arm manuever). Has this been posted already? Is this is a best practice, so to speak? Not to divert the conversation. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
