Looking for a quill stem similar to the Nitto Pearl - love the no welds look, but with a removable 2-bolt face. 120mm size, 17*.

I would appreciate if you can include links to pics.

Thanks!

Good luck on your quest. I don't think any are being made anymore. Best guess would be e-bay.

Personally I've given up the chase...though if you do find success let me know.

The only thing that may come sorta close with open faceplate is Deda Murex. Hard to find in silver. And I found it to be nice looking but not so rigid. I recommend the Nitto without the faceplate and just grin and bare it when you need to take off the bars for whatever reason. I find it a bit of challenge to even mount a Nitto on the bars without scraping on the sharp turns.

Salsa Sul is a good one and becoming hard to find too. Get one and have it powdered to your color of choice.

Another obscure hard to find one that looks interesting is TTT Mutant stem in silver.

God save the quill. (but don't put that quote on the wall of the court house.)

my favorite are the ones brought out by Shimano- though I know they didnt make them- Peter White has some still- but no removable faceplate- sorry

The Shimano stems were made by Nitto, IIRC.

You might talk to Dave Levy (Ti Cycles) or Nic Schmidt (Capitol Cycles) or any other good builder and ask them to make you a custom fillet-brazed quill stem - have checkbook ready. I don't think there has ever been an old-school style forged quill stem with a removable faceplate, but I could be wrong.

Nitto is king.

I am part of the "quill-stem-it-just-won't-die!" crowd...ColoradoCyclist is selling the Deda Murex for 60 bucks, both black and silver available, check it out! (http://www.coloradocyclist.com/common/products/productdisplay2_v2.cfm?PRRFNBR=16120&CGRFNBR=619&CRPCGNBR=619&CI=1,225,501,619&TextMode=0)

Not too long ago, David Kirk was getting rid of a bunch of his fillet-brazed stems at firesale prices, you just have to pray that another such rare moment of "exceptional kindness the world today ever witness" would happen again and hopefully soon...:D

That would be cool since it is for Kirk Terraplane #1.

A couple of sizes in silver.

As I said above, these are a unique looking design.

If I didn't need a bit more rise I'd get one just for the stash.

You can always paint it pink...

There are adapters available that allow you to use a threadless headset style stem on a threaded steerer. It's basically a stem quill with no extension; you just clamp your threadless style stem onto it and insert into your fork. Check your local bike shop or the catalogs.

If your search comes up fruitless, it's not a bad alternative.

Oh...I see. I would strongly encourage you to contact Dave-pal. He's in especially good mood these days.
:D

I am sorry to say this...but nothing will feel or look right on a Terraplane except one of its own filet-brazed body parts.

Not to your taste maybe. Maybe not to anyone's taste. Maybe not even mine but....

How about the curves of this quill with the elegant curves of the Tplane?

Not the best looking thing, but stiff and strong. It's a quill stem with a detachable 2 bolt face plate. They were tig welded alum available in silver or black.

Since it would clearly be part of a historic display, you could probably get away with it :D

Thanks, but perhaps you did not read my original post about welds?

Scott if you are going with a Nitto bar I would strongly recommend the Nitto stem.
The Nitto Pearl is a great stem and fits the Nitto bars dead on.
You probably won't have to remove the bars anyways....

Ditto Nitto.

Once you get it right you won't be changing them out anyway.

looks cool but is a major wet noodle of a stem.

Get an itm eclypse.

Can't remember seeing seen a forged quill stem with a removeable face plate and the profile is the only quill stem I know of that has one. If possible, I'd go with the Nitto. Mind if I ask why you need a removeable face plate?

Here's a picture. Not sure where you can find one. I bought one about a year ago from Bulltek Sports, but they no longer list it. You might call them anyway.

I believe the Murex is a forged stem that has a removeable plate that faces down, and if I recall correctly, you can get one in black or silver

Yep, the Frog or the Salsa SUL are the two that I have narrowed it down to. Sadly, both are as rare as the proverbial hen's teeth.

Another option that no one has mentioned is the 3TTT Motus stem. In silhouette, it's lovely. In detail, the plastic cap on the rear portion detracts a little (to my eye, at any rate). I would also prefer a Nitto-like plain silver finish but this stem is only available in black or a (relatively benign) titanium-like finish:

BTW, Nitto do make quill stems with removable face-plates, but they don't appear to be available outside of Japan.

Here's another thumbs up for the Cinelli Frog. It's an odd blend of vintage and contemporary but I really like it.
