I recently had my lbs rebuild my wheelset using Stans Alpha 340 rims. Since then, I had two tubes blow out -- both on the back wheel, after 30 - 50 miles of riding, and both while I was jra. I'm using Conti gp 4-season 25's, and the tubes are Conti Race 700, which have sat on my workbench for a number of years.

Should I suspect some issue with the rims, which have a different "bead socket" than my old DT Swiss RR 1.1, or do I probably have some bad, old tubes that I shouldn't be using? I haven't had tubes blow like this for many years and many thousands of miles...

Thanks

Jeff

Puncture on the inside of the tube...check the rim strips on the wheel.
Puncture on the side of the tube....probably caught under the tire bead when mounting.

Could be just old tubes are the problem.

if you know how to install tubes correctly

i'm gonna vote for the tubes being too old.

I have been very careful in mounting these, so new tubes sounds like the trick. Thanks...

You mean BANG!! blow out? Or do you mean they simply failed with some kind of leak? I can't see an explosive BANG happening because a tube is old. The only way you're going to get a BANG is if the tube has escaped from the tire, at least in my experience. And believe me, I've used plenty of really old tubes - almost old enough to vote and drink beer.

bang - run for cover - blow out...

In that case, I'd take a hard look at the way the tires seat.

Yes. typically in a bang type blowout, where the tube is pretty decimated, it is a tire seating problem. Are your tubes blown out in the same spot?

About a six inch slit in the side of the tube. First time was after about 50 miles.

We'll it seems like it was the tire after all. Only thing I hadn't tried, so after a call to Stan's, I replaced the nearly new Conti GP 4-season with a new one, and haven't had a problem in about 500 miles since. The tire had some barely-noticeable thinness in the bead, but no breaks or tears. It went back to Conti, and they are sending me a new one, although I've gotten no feedback about the problem.
