Ok, the randonneur frame is done...now we're on to color...what says you ladies and gentlemen? It'll have a brown B17 and brown Brooks bar tape the polished VO seatpost and stem..these things are non-negotiable. I really like green particularly the emerald of my wife's eyes but green seems to be over used on these types of bikes..

*edit* it'll also have the alu VO fenders and open 4cd's with silver hubs and spokes.

The "blue mink" and silver like on the old Raleigh Professional's is timeless..

Here is an example: http://velospace.org/node/7415

You could even swap out the silver for cream or ivory and it would be sharp.

No, don't do that, that's where I'm going with my new frame!

Awesome, is Bedford building it?

That blue is nice not only because it is a good looking color, but it hides dirt, scratches and wear well. Dark colors show so much IMO.

Best of luck!

The color of your wife's eyes. I like that idea. Maybe I should have that done for my next bike... Or my next wife.

But that is a cool thought and if you really like that, go with that. But eyes aren't just a single color but it will be green with some gold or yellow or brown (or all of them). Take an extreme close up shot of your wife's eyes in outdoor light and then try to match the color.

I agree that ivory or cream colored panels are practically mandatory. For the main color, one can never go wrong with some form of light blue, but burgundy works, as does green, brown, silver or yellow. Or, for a slightly more contemporary look, consider brown with black panels. That would be sweet with the brown saddle and tape.

I also like the theme of your wife's eye color. I think trying to truly match it would be tough, but another approach is to pick the shade that most clearly reminds you of her eye color. Like, from that day at the beach, when.... :)

Avalon nailed it...theme after your wife's eyes is money.

First off, it speaks well of your love for your wife.

It may get you out on an extra ride or two..."honey, I am going out on the bike I painted the same color as your eyes"

....and it's a given that you should get some other additional "mileage" by going with that color. ;)

Have you used the Velo-Orange seatpost before?

IME, they slip (due to being undersized), and it can be difficult to get the saddle's nose angled down enough depending on the saddle and STA.

While panels may look nice on certain bikes, I don't really think they go with the 'randonneur style,' at least not with large chrome fenders like the fat-tired 650B randonneurs folks like Mitch Pryor and Peter Weigle make. In my opinion, generally fairly subdued colors work best there, as the frame color takes on a supporting role while the chrome accents (fenders, cranks, handlebars, stems, etc.) take the spotlight. Panels would fight for attention. I've seen some pretty randonneurs with panels - Vanilla comes to mind (and is easy to spell) - but they had fenders and stems painted the same color as the frame, so the panels were spotlighted.

I have a two bolt VO post and I have been happy with it, no slippage and I weigh 225.

If you are talking motorcycles, green is considered bad luck, I see that. but not with bicycles....A green bike is considered bad luck.

I just did a powder blue rando bike, and I like it.

Either that or the creme color like the Tournesol.

I bought a new bike last year. All of the decisions were easy for me except color. I looked at 200+ pictures of cool bikes on-line and most of them looked really good, but after awhile they all looked the same (have to admit I am not real great at colors). I went with the builder's team colors because i liked them and could not be happier.

when I got my IMBA shirt recently, it was a dark brown with baby blue and creame accents... I think that would look awesome on a bike... especially a Rando bike for some reason...

Joe Bell painted a custom Rivendell for Douglas Brooks that was one of the most beautiful frames I ever saw. It was a deep blue-green with very subtle flecks of gold which looked just like waves in the surfline in La Jolla. The head tube and some lugs were cream. I got the code for the House of Kolor paints used. It was a black base coat under blue-green (teal) top coat followed by several clear coats.

Too bad the custom bike I ordered was never built so I never got to use this yummy paint job.

Chris,

I know you're an American in Germany, but wouldn't it be nice to feel like you're riding on something with some national pride?

Here's the inspiration.

I like green bike (I had a Legend in Cha-Ching Green for years) and I like the idea of matching the color of your wife's eyes. This is my new to me fixed frame (Jonny Cycles) and I'm using similar components (brown leather seat and tape, all silver parts, Dura Ace, King, Thomson, Phil Wood laced to Mavic OP, etc.). It is an iridescent off white with blue and a touch of yellow. I'm really digging the paint.

Thanks to rodcad for the pics, and the deal on the frame. I'll shoot new build pics when I finish building the wheels for it next week.

I haven't read the rest of this thread yet, so I apologize if you've updated your criteria or ruled out some color combinations subsequently...but for a randonneur frame with brown Brooks saddle & bar tape, I'd go for something like a muted, almost beige-like tangerine or terra cotta, with cream accents or panels.

OK, I think I'm going to go green...still pondering panels you don't see many audax/randonneur frames with panels.

Yea the reason I'm going with it is because it's pretty and I own it already.
