Green Onions was BIG when I was a student at Northwestern U. hanging out nights at Marie's Huddle Lounge and it got LOTS of juke box play. Then came "Mo' Onions" and "Still Mo' Onions". MG= Memphis Group because they played for lots of studio sessions in Memphis studios like Sun Records where Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and some guy named Elvis recorded.

My buddy "Gumper", who owns a body shop and drives a lowered '59 aqua El Camino asked me to make him a CD that plays nothing but Green Onions. So I did, 80 minutes worth.

I love the instrumental rock stuff from the early 60s. One of my favorites is "Church Key" by the Revels, 1961. You can find that and 25 other surf classics (including "Pipeline") on the Surf Legends (and Rumors) compilation, Del Rack DRZ 915, 1988.

Forgot to mention, it also contains the awesome "Comanche", also by the Revels (1962) that some of you might know from an obscure Trenton Quarantino movie. Can't remember the exact scene, but I think somebody gets murdered.

The MG's is the same backing band that Dan Ackroyd and John Belushi used for the Blues Brothers. Those guys can play a little bit.

I think only Steve Cropper and Duck Dunn were in the Blues Brothers movie, but the point is well taken.

The whole band, or members thereof, played on countless Stax/Volt sides. I don't know how available this box is, but if you can find it, it's worth the price.
Or just drop in, bring some juice, listen for free.

You can find the box set on ebay and/or amazon if you look enough. There are several different versions and I will get one of them one of these days.
