My Garmin 500 is asking for a position format..I am located in the Northwest. Which one should I choose?

Your actual location doesn't affect the format of the presentation of the information. That's up to you, so use whatever you prefer. Sort giving an angle in degrees or radians - same info, different units.
I googled "position format garmin" and got a bunch of hits. First one is shown below:
Most common position formats when using GARMIN GPS:
(change position format by going to:
main menu – setup – navigation – position format
or
main menu –navigation – position format)
Position formats:
hddd.ddddd = decimal degrees
hdd mm’ss.s” = Latitude / longitude in degrees, minutes, seconds
UTM/UPS = Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM)

I wanted to use the one that matched my wife's in-car Garmin nav so if I needed a pick-up in the boonies she could program my destination easily from the numbers I was reading to her over the phone.
