Hi,

I am heading to the Alps and I plan to ride some pass and remote cols on my CX bike.
I want to start from far away so I will need to connect and ride on road and dirt.
What is your recommendation for a great CX tire, with good road and dirt capabilities ?

thank you

On a moderately price basis, I like the Bontrager Jones and Kenda Small Block Eight. The latter is better for hard-pack, fire-road type trails rather than loose gravel.

You can spend big bucks for Challenge Grifo tires.

BTW, I'm assuming you want clinchers.

if it will be mostly road with some dirt sections, you want more of a road tire than a dirt tire, for sure.

i highly recommend the vittoria open paves for what you're describing.

I just mounted some Conti Cyclocross Speed tires, and they roll really nicely. Used them for a 71 mile gravel road race a few weekends ago, and they were great.

Maxxis Locust is a lower cost tire that has good performance on road at 70 psi and decent traction on dirt/grass at lower psi. Not great in the mud as it doesn't shed soft mud that well.

You might look at file treads. I love the challenge griffo xs. It is fast on both road and dirt, yet has some decent side treads for hooking up when it gets sketchy.

just a thought.
