ROME (AP) — Italian cyclist Gilberto Simoni will skip the Tour de France because he hasn't recovered from last month's Giro d'Italia, where he finished second.
"It's clear that I have muscular fatigue," he said in Tuesday's sports newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport. "Going to France would have been useless. It would have been a disaster for me."
Tour organizers were unable to confirm Simoni's plans. They will not have the definitive list of riders from teams until Wednesday.
Simoni was expected to lead his Lampre-Caffita team in the Tour, which begins Saturday and ends July 24. The two-time Giro winner could return to racing in late July, Gazzetta said.

He's probably afraid of taking a shelling from Lance on his farewell tour. Better to come back next year and claim that he coulda beat LA if he weren't fatigued.......(but since LA will be retired we'll never know). Heck, didn't Tyler A+B ride it one year with some broken bones?

. . . may not be what Simoni has to say so much as what the team management has to say about it. Cunego is indeed out--with some sort of glandular fever apparently similar to mono. Lampre is a big money outfit and without Simoni riding, who would their leader be? And do they even HAVE a sprinter? They are paying a pantload of lira to field a team to get them big time publicity. This may not be Simoni's decision to make.

Here's the story from VeloNews . . . They have just become invisible in the tour and will be extremely lucky to even get a stage win, IMHO.

No Gibo' for Tour

In somewhat of a surprise announcement, Lampre-Caffita revealed its Tour nine with one name conspicuously missing: Gilberto Simoni.

Simoni, 33, finished second in the Giro d'Italia and began hinting he would race the Tour. Speculation rose another notch when it was revealed Italian prodigy Damiano Cunego wouldn't be starting after being diagnosed with Epstein-Barr virus.

Simoni, however, said it was never in his plans to race the Tour and instead will take on the Vuelta a España later this season. The two-time Giro champion is also in the final year of his contract and has been linked with a move to Domina Vacanze, leaving Cunego and the pair's sometimes acrimonious partnership behind.

Without Simoni or Cunego, the team won't have a clear GC contender and instead will pin its hopes on winning a stage with the likes of Gianluca Bortolami or Salvatore Commesso.
